FEATURE INTERVIEW:

YOUR SECOND ALBUM HAS A VERY DIFFERENT SOUND FROM YOUR FIRST, BUT YOU’VE MANAGED TO KEEP YOUR ESSENCE IN BOTH. WHAT CAN WE EXPECT FROM YOUR NEXT PROJECT?

I’m an artist that you can’t expect anything specific from me. My next album is going to be in a way that no one is expecting, I’m very instinctive about my art and that means that my delivery isn’t obvious, boxed up…often I don’t even know what’s going to come out, so the essence remains, because it’s very genuine.

YOU EXPRESS YOUR SEXUALITY IN A VERY NATURAL WAY. IN YOUR OPINION, IS FEMALE SEXUALITY STILL TABOO IN SOCIETY?
Sensuality is a power, which I don’t see as a sin, as many do, I see it as strength. And everyone has this strength. I combine my freedom with my sensuality. It comes naturally to me. I feel free to live as I am. And I think people sexualize everything, they can’t see an extra centimeter of skin and think of sex. Before sexualizing a body, you have to think that it’s just a body living and expressing itself, it’s not about you.
WHAT PART OF YOUR JOB DO YOU LOVE THE MOST?
Performing and composing.  These are two things that really feed my soul and my self-esteem. When I go into the studio and make a song, for example, I think: my God! I’m beautiful! My self-esteem comes flooding back. And the same thing happens when I play a show. Sometimes I have low self-esteem and all I have to do is play a show and my self-esteem comes back to me immediately. I think these are two things that really make me understand my role in the world.
WHO WERE YOUR BIGGEST INSPIRATIONS FOR PURSUING A CAREER IN MUSIC?
I have a few, but the biggest one in my entire existence is Gal Costa. I think that any artistic manifestation coming from me has Gal Costa in it, because I’ve absorbed so much of her work, listened to her so much that everything I do has her in it. And as a behavioral reference too. Certainly in
all my work, she will always be there.
HOW DOES YOUR CREATIVE PROCESS WORK?
When I make my songs, I imagine a scene, a story, a vibe or a place and make a song for the situation. In general, the situations make me create the songs. It’s as if I were really making a soundtrack for a movie scene. So the aesthetic is completely linked to my music.
VISUALS ARE A STRIKING FEATURE OF YOUR WORK. HOW DO YOU MAKE THE CONNECTION BETWEEN THE VISUAL AND THE MUSICAL IN THE CONSTRUCTION OF YOUR PROJECTS?
My songs immediately bring an image, so it’s very organic to develop my image, we accentuate things that are already mine, and I’m very perfectionist when it comes to who I work with, this is very important when it comes to printing the right thing in the image. I like non-obvious professionals, who make bold readings and have unique textures.
IF YOU COULD GO BACK IN TIME AND GIVE MARINA ADVICE FROM THE PAST, WHAT WOULD YOU SAY?
I’d tell her never to miss an opportunity to go to a waterfall when she lived in the north of Minas Gerais, because now she has little time for it and she miss it all the time lol.
WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE PLACE IN THE WORLD, OUTSIDE OF BRAZIL?
I don’t really have a favorite place yet, but there are many that I’ve really enjoyed: Barcelona, Lisbon, London… I want to visit Thailand, Japan… I feel like I’m going to like it a lot.
MUSIC HAS THE POWER TO CONNECT CULTURES AROUND THE WORLD. ARE YOU THINKING OF CREATING SOMETHING SPECIFIC TO WIN OVER AN AUDIENCE OUTSIDE BRAZIL?
I’m sure that music transcends any territorial barrier when it’s real, and I always try to make music that will transcend all barriers and reach people, because it makes every human being feel. But I always create opportunities to connect with other countries, and I hope to do that more and more.
WHAT WOULD A PERFECT DAY LOOK LIKE FOR YOU?
I really like going to the beach, going to the waterfall, listening to music in the water with my friends, sleeping well, eating only healthy things, watching the stars at night. And preferably on a sunny day.
WHICH ARTIST IS ALWAYS ON YOUR PLAYLIST?
Lately I’ve been listening a lot to Matuê’s new album, listening a lot to Arca, Milton Nascimento, Jorge Ben, Liniker and Djavan.
WHAT IS YOUR DREAM FEATURING IN BRAZIL AND OUTSIDE?
In Brazil my dream feat is Djavan. And outside of brazil, it’s Rosalia.
