Kristin Cavallari Spills Exactly How ‘The Hills’ Producers Fed Her Lines
If you thought “The Hills” was a reality show, you were wrong.
As Kristin Cavallari has made clear again and again, the MTV show that defined the late 2000s was pretty much completely scripted.
Kristin sat down with BuzzFeed and spilled every last drop of tea about her time on “Laguna Beach” and “The Hills.” At least, it seems like every last drop of tea — but knowing Kristin, our girl will come up with some even more newsworthy secrets in a few months.
On “Laguna,” Kristin explained, the producers had a pretty light hand — they didn’t tell the cast what to say verbatim.
“The only time producers fed me lines on ‘Laguna Beach’ were more fake phone calls or pickup scenes,” she said. “We’d film for nine months out of the year and then they would start cutting episodes together and they would realize that they needed a specific scene. So then we’d go back and film prom as though it didn’t happen yet or we’d film it as though it just had happened. It wasn’t necessarily an exact line as what to say on Laguna Beach. It was more just ‘talk about this.'”
This was not the case on “The Hills.”
“In ‘The Hills,'” she said, “they would text us exactly what to say.”
They did it by TEXTING?!
Still, because the show was so scripted, Kristin actually had a better — or at least more sane — time filming “The Hills” than “Laguna.”
On “The Hills,” she realized she was playing a character and was able to keep her “Hills” life separate from her real life, she said. This not only made her more able to shrug off her (unfair!) depiction as the “bitch” of the show, but also made her have more fun, she said.
On “Laguna,” though, some cast members “couldn’t distinguish what was real and what was fake anymore,” she said. “It was kind of scary to see so I kept them very separate so that I didn’t go crazy.”
