More Teens Than Ever Now Identify As Bisexual
A new poll shows that kids these days are way chiller than their parents — and even chiller than millennials — when it comes to sexual orientation.
In the survey, the J. Walter Thompson Innovation Group asked kids ages 13 to 20 to describe their sexuality on a scale of zero to six, according to Broadly. Zero meant completely straight while six meant completely homosexual.
“On a scale of zero to six, where zero signified ‘completely straight’ and six meant ‘completely homosexual,’ more than a third of the young demographic chose a number between one and five, indicating that they were bisexual to some degree. Only 24 percent of their older counterparts identified this way.”
Also, only 48 percent of teens surveyed said they were totally straight. Meanwhile, 65 percent of millennials aged 21 to 34 say they’re totally straight. That’s a pretty big difference.
The younger generation is also more likely to go by gender-neutral pronouns. An incredible 56 percent of 13-to-20-year-olds said they knew someone who went by “they,” “them,” “ze,” or another gender-neutral pronoun.
Generation Z is shaping up to be way more relaxed about issues of gender and sexuality than any other group. We can’t say we’re surprised since things have been trending this way for some time, but hopefully it’s not just a trend.
