Now, join us in our exclusive interview with Kayls where she discusses the details about her life, upcoming EP, and much more.
Kayls, thank you so much for giving us a bit of your time today. How are you doing?
Thank you for having me, I’m doing well. I just released the second single from my upcoming EP “Jasmine” which feels exciting. It took some time for me to become the person I am today and I’m excited to share that journey with the world by continuing to release music that I’m proud of.
To start, we would like to know a bit more about who you are and your beginnings in music. What inspired you to pursue a career in music?
I was always singing, from day one, and changing the words to my nursery rhymes. I had the musical gene coming from all directions. My maternal grandmother was a singer and played piano, my dad sings, and my paternal grandfather was a touring musician his entire life. He played guitar for some legends along the way and he was always rehearsing so it was just a part of who I was. As I grew up and began to develop an understanding of the instrumental part that music played in my life and how it made me feel, which was always better, I decided to really go for it.
What or who are your main inspirations while making music?
Honestly, songwriting has always been my true love. I’m not in love with just getting up to sing in front of people for the performance aspect or for the attention. I need to be singing a song I wrote, telling a story. The artists that do that masterfully, in all genres, are the ones that have influenced me along the way. I grew up listening to such an eclectic mix of music and still do. Right now I have a lot to write about because I’m still growing up, I’m making mistakes, and learning how to make better choices every day. Falling in love, thinking about life, the future, the past. All of those things are what inspire me on a daily basis. That evolution and the things that we feel that we let pass. Instead of letting them pass, I like to grab them and put them into a song.
In this opportunity, you’re releasing “Internet” and it’s an incredible song! What was the creative process behind it?
Thank you. Honestly, I started writing it on my piano one night when I was struggling a bit emotionally and found myself in a death scroll. All of the passing thoughts I sing about in the verses were really running through my mind. I just thought, what am I doing? This is kind of ridiculous. Get off of the Internet. And then I wrote the song and once I started working with a producer, Ethan Kaufmann, for my EP it became one of the ones that I really wanted to finish.
What is the story behind this track? What was the inspiration behind it?
I kind of just answered that by accident 🙂 But really, I wanted to try to heal my relationship with the internet. I was allowing it to take from me at a time when I was already feeling depleted. It was also the first time I had ever in my life said out loud “I’m depressed.” I felt like I needed to put that on paper so I couldn’t run from that truth. It helped me find a way out. I guess in a way I wrote the song for myself, to hold myself accountable.
You’ll be launching your EP “Jasmine”. Do you have a date yet for the release? Are there any details you can share with us?
I’m really hoping November but there’s no set date yet! — I really love every single song on this EP. I’ll just say the songs feel freeing to me. AND if you want to hear them before it’s released you can come to my show next week. 🙂 I’ll be playing all of the songs live, November 24th at Bar Lubitsch. But if you can’t make it you can follow me on socials where I’ll be teasing the songs.
Once you’ve released your EP, what are your plans? Is there anything you want to accomplish next?
I’m hoping to get on a tour supporting another artist, play festivals, and release more music next year. In addition, I have been studying and pursuing acting and I hope to have a nice debut on the screen in the next year!
I read that you discovered your passion for sewing as a child, and since then you sew your own clothes and costumes. How did this interest in sewing begin? Of all the costumes you sewed for yourself, which one was your favorite?
I think it was just another imaginary world that lived inside my head that I could bring into the physical world. I really love telling the stories through the costuming. My favorite thus far is the one I’ve made for the cover of the EP. The act of sewing and designing is also quite cathartic.
Your passion for sewing led you to create your own brand, LÉONIE, a gender-fluid brand specializing in the reimagination of the classic wool béret. That’s very impressive! How would you describe your line?
Yes, I always knew I wanted a line I just didn’t want a ready-to-wear line that blended with every other line. I knew I needed a product that would stand out to fulfill the desire I have to create designs that are imaginative. LÉONIE means lioness in French and my brand’s mission statement is “Let The Light In,” I just want to keep creating new designs that share the same meaning. I am working on that but for now, it lives solely as a line of bérets made out of designer deadstock silk organzas.
Let’s wrap it up for today. Thank you again Kayls for sharing with us and our readers here at Galore! Would you like to add anything else?
Thank you so much 🙂 I think that covers it. I’m just excited to keep sharing music and art and hope it all reaches the right people. I hope you have a great day x
