This Instagram account is calling out the fashion fakezzz

Have you ever seen shoes at Topshop and thought, “Those look strangely familiar to Chanel’s platforms from ’92”?

If your answer is yes, and I’m assuming it is, then you would love following the Instagram account of Diet Prada. So many brands and designers rip each other off, from designs to cuts and to patterns. Whether it’s a fast fashion brand knocking off Balenciaga, or Balenciaga knocking off Celine, it happens all over the place.

Following Diet Prada made me realize that knocking off ideas in the fashion world happens way more often than I thought. High-end designers I thought were reputable end up surprising me with how much they steal from others. It’s extremely funny, and pretty disappointing. At the same time, though, it didn’t surprise me. After such a long time, there are only so many new and fresh ideas that people can come up with.

Vice has branded Diet Prada as “one of the fashion world’s toughest critics,” which isn’t a bold statement when you think about it. The accusation of high-end fashion brands knocking others off can take a toll on sales and reputation.

The account is run anonymously, by someone who says they have worked in the fashion industry for a long time. They were even recently invited backstage at Gucci’s fashion week show to critique the designer up close. No one knows who runs Diet Prada, and it’s more fun to keep it that way, because they’re basically the every-man of fashion. Sometimes, Diet Prada even catches designers stealing from visual artists and even a Britney Spears music video.

Sometimes it seems like the account is just having some fun, like when they compare a Gucci coat to Margot Tenenbaum’s fur coat in The Royal Tenenbaums. Other times, they’re serious — some designers get called out very often, and it’s clear that Diet Prada and it’s followers are getting sick of seeing said designers make tons of money off of other people’s hard work. So, what is the difference between straight up copy catting and an ode to the past? Diet Prada sort of leaves that decision up to you. Make sure to check them out!
