How did you get into music?
I grew up surrounded by music! My mother was a professional classical harpsichordist with a background in jazz piano. My sisters and I studied music from a very young age. I started piano lessons at age 5, and then switched to the oboe at 10. I always sang–Jazz, Musical Theatre, Opera– and my mom was always my greatest accompanist.
How would describe your sound?
Soulful and glam, with a melancholic edge. It’s modern and edgy, but simultaneously, takes you back to yesteryear.
Is your name an alias? If so, where did it come from?
Ha! Nope! This is the first and middle name on my birth certificate.
Who inspires you artistically?
I am inspired by artists who are soulful, passionate, and vulnerable. I grew up with a lot of jazz and Motown and that is definitely what fuels my sound. I always identified with Sarah Vaughan because of her low, contralto voice. I am also inspired by many of the ‘classic divas’; Tina Turner, Aretha Franklin, Janis Joplin– strong, powerful women! In more recent years, I have become inspired by quite a bit of 1960’s/70’s folk music and 1990‘s anti-folk.
What’s been a highlight so far?
I recently performed at the Queer Music Festival in the West Village. It was a bacchanalia, and a really great, and genuine crowd! It was such a reinforcement for why I love playing live music.
What music will you be listening to this summer?
I’ve been listening to Tori Amos’s new album Unrepentant Geraldines. I love any Amy Winehouse album any time of year, but especially as a summer soundtrack- Frank is my personal favorite of her albums.
What coming up for you?
My EP is coming out July 8th! I will be celebrating the release with a show at Joe’s Pub at the Public Theater in NYC on Saturday, July 12th!
