Rooted in Culture, Built for the World: Mariel Gomerez-Rodriguez’s Creative Evolution Into Bodega Records

Bodegas are meeting points where culture, music, language, and everyday life exist side by side. They are places where traditions travel through generations, where familiar faces become part of the landscape, and where identity is preserved in the smallest details. That sense of connection sits at the foundation of Bodega Records, the independent label created by Dominican-American A&R and producer Mariel Gomerez-Rodriguez to champion artists and stories rooted in culture.

Mariel has spent more than a decade helping shape the direction of independent music and the global expansion of Latin culture. Her work at Human Re Sources became one of the clearest examples of her ability to recognize potential before the industry caught up. When British singer-songwriter RAYE was looking for a path beyond the limitations of a major-label system, Mariel played a key role in supporting her transition to independence. That decision became part of the story behind “My 21st Century Blues,” the groundbreaking album that earned RAYE a historic six BRIT Award nominations in a single night and reinforced the power of artist-driven careers.

Now, with Bodega Records, Mariel is creating the kind of infrastructure she believes artists deserve. The label is designed to work alongside creators rather than simply package them, offering emerging talent the resources, support, and creative ownership that traditional industry models often fail to provide.

“My mission is not only to elevate overlooked voices but to help creatives articulate their purpose and create lasting cultural impact,” says Gomerez-Rodriguez. “I want to prioritize inclusive storytelling to ensure that stories are told with communities, not simply about them.”

Bodega’s very first signing is Planta Industrial, a fiercely idiosyncratic and completely unapologetic Dominican punk duo.

“We chose Bodega Records because they truly understand our sound and vision and are ready to go all in with us,” says Planta Industrial. “We’re excited to work closely with Mariel to move with urgency and give our community the music and representation they’ve been waiting for.”

By prioritizing left-of-center voices and raw cultural authenticity, Bodega Records is smashing through industry roadblocks and uplifting talents from around the global block.
