FEATURE INTERVIEW:
WHO ARE YOUR DRAG QUEEN HEROINES?
RuPaul and Márcia Pantera! And many others, of course! But I can name these two as super important to me personally.
TALK TO US ABOUT YOUR LATEST COLLABORATION WITH SEVDALIZA. HOW IT CAME ABOUT AND IS PRACTICALLY THE ANTHEM OF THE SUMMER.
I’ve always been a fan of Sevdaliza, you know! When she sent me the song to collaborate on, I immediately went into the studio to work on my part. Working with Sevdaliza and Yseult was easy, fun and incredible. Two super-powered girls, and being able to share our history and past by working together is wonderful. And now you have the remix with my baby, Anitta! The music is getting better and better!
HOW IS PHABULLO DIFFERENT FROM PABBLLO?
I’m super calm and even shy when I’m out of drag! I love wearing baggy clothes, hats, glasses and Adidas sneakers! I like to stay at home, play video games and watch movies and series about real crimes. And well, you know Pabllo Vittar! Fierce, flawless make-up, incredible clothes and loves the spotlight! The party only starts when Pabllo Vittar enters the room, you know! Hahaha.
WHAT WAS THE FIRST SONG YOU HEARD AS A CHILD THAT MADE YOU WANT TO ENTER THE MUSIC INDUSTRY?
Probably “I Have Nothing” by Whitney Houston!
YOU PLAY A LOT WITH YOUR HAIR AND WIGS. WHAT IS YOUR BEAUTY PHILOSOPHY WHEN IT COMES TO HAIR?
I only have two rules! Bows must be done by Sidney Salles and hair by Thereza Brown! I can’t live without those two in my life!
WHAT’S THE BEAUTY TRICK THAT ONLY BRAZILIANS KNOW?
Confidence. Period! Everything else comes with it!
WHAT’S THE BEST PIECE OF ADVICE YOUR MOTHER EVER GAVE YOU?
To be true to myself at all times and to work hard!
FOR READERS WHO DON’T SPEAK PORTUGUESE, TELL US WHAT YOUR FAVORITE PORTUGUESE WORD OR SAYING IS.
It’s “pamonha”! I love the way you pronounce that word! Pamonha (in Spanish you would pronounce it “pamoña”) is a Brazilian food, similar to a tamal, made from corn!
WHAT IS YOUR BEAUTY REGIME DURING THE TOUR?
A good skin treatment every day and lots and lots of water.
WHICH PART OF THE LYRICS OF “SÃO AMORES” DO YOU LIKE THE MOST?
I love it when the audience sings “PEY PEY PEY” back! That connection makes me feel at home!
HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR MUSIC?
Fun, fun, fun, fun and fun! I make music to make everyone happy, to make everyone dance and have fun with a good drink in hand and friends by their side.
YOU RELEASED “BATIDÃO TROPICAL VOL. 2” IN APRIL. WHICH SONG ON THE ALBUM IS YOUR FAVORITE AND WHY?
That’s always changing! But right now it’s the two I’ve just released! “Hoje à Noite“, with Nattan, and “Planeta de Cores“, with Mara Pavanelly and Forrozão Tropykália.
DO YOU HAVE A NAME FOR YOUR FANS, LIKE MANY OTHER ARTISTS?
Vittarlovers! They named themselves, I just loved it and accepted it! Hahahaha!
HOW WAS YOUR EXPERIENCE WITH PRIDE THIS YEAR, AND WHAT DO YOU THINK COULD MAKE IT EVEN BETTER NEXT YEAR?
This year, I had two different ways of celebrating! The first was with my concert on Avenida Paulista and also by launching my collaboration with Adidas globally, with the Pride Collection!
LET’S TALK ABOUT LOVE, ARE YOU DATING?
I’m not a dating person! LOL.
WHAT ARE GREEN FLAGS AND RED FLAGS IN A RELATIONSHIP?
Green flags – not getting emotionally attached.
Red flags – being emotionally attached! LOL.
WHO DO YOU DREAM OF COLLABORATING WITH?
There are so many people! I’m listening to Lisa and Rosalía at the moment, and they’re two artists I’d love to collaborate with!
WHAT’S YOUR OPINION ON THE POLITICAL CLIMATE IN BRAZIL AND WHAT’S HAPPENING IN THE U.S. TOO?
We’re living in a time when we need to act now! It’s not about the future anymore, it’s happening right in front of us! If we don’t take real action now, I don’t know what kind of world we’ll be in in a few years time.
AS AN LGBTQP+ PERSON FROM BRAZIL AND THE NORTHEAST OF THE COUNTRY, WHAT WERE THE BIGGEST DIFFICULTIES YOU FACED IN ACHIEVING YOUR SUCCESS AND BECOMING ONE OF THE MOST SUCCESSFUL DRAG QUEENS IN HISTORY?
People everywhere find excuses to say we’re not talented or competent, but we all know that’s just a way of hiding LGBT-phobia! That’s the hardest thing to overcome in the music industry too.
YOU’RE THE MOST FOLLOWED DRAG QUEEN IN THE WORLD. HOW DO YOU FEEL ABOUT SOCIAL MEDIA?
I love some and hate others! lol! But I’ve learned that you can just let it go, you know? So, the ones I like, I’m there; the others, I’m not.
DO YOU HAVE ANYTHING TO SAY TO THE PUBLIC HERE IN THE U.S. AND IN LATIN AMERICA? ANY NEW ACHIEVEMENTS COMING UP?
New collaborations are coming up for my non-Portuguese-speaking fans! And also a global tour next year, which will take in all of North America, Latin America, Europe and Australia!
WHAT’S NEXT FOR YOU AT THE END OF 2024?
I’m getting ready for the Brazilian summer and carnival, and also working on my next album, which will be released next year!
