Charlotte Lawrence: California Girl

Singer, songwriter, and all around artist, Charlotte Lawrence, is also Galore’s newest Covergirl!

We are obsessed with Charlotte, because she’s an artist that oozes the idea of truly being yourself. The singer is adamant about expressing herself in her own way – and if people don’t like it? She doesn’t care. It just makes her be even more of her unique self.

The singer is only 19 years old, and she’s blown up since she first began putting out music in 2014. She has already worked with some of the biggest names in music, because of her mesmerizing sound, her intense work ethic, and her determination to better the music industry and the world.

We sat down with Charlotte to discuss her beauty tips, growing up in LA, her hands-on way of working, and what we can expect from her next year.

Check out the exclusive interview and photoshoot below!

When did you first fall in love with music? What song made you want to be a musician/performer?

Ahhh I was always in love with music. I would become obsessed with a Bob Dylan or Tom Petty song at age 6 and make my mom play it 10 times in a row in the car on the way to school. I think I was born with it in my blood, I wanted my entire life to be surrounded by and intertwined with music since before I can remember. The song that made me want to be a musician was Skinny Love by Bon Iver. First song I ever covered, ever recorded.

You make love songs for our generation. Where did you find the inspiration for writing “Why Do You Love Me?” & “Navy Blue”?

(Laughs) I don’t consider them love songs at all – more so anti-love songs. Both of the songs portray very dark, toxic relationships… Every song I write is about an experience I went through or a feeling I had. I tell my stories and let out my emotions through my lyrics, and I guess the truth is, I truly can’t find as much inspiration in happiness as I can from sadness or anger or heartbreak etc. Makes me seem wayyyyyy darker than I am.

The visuals for “Why Do You Love Me” are awesome, I have always wanted to burn my ex boyfriends car. Did you come up with the concept for the video with Alasdair McLellan?

With Alasdair we wanted to portray a super dark relationship but in a very exaggerated way. The video shows how badly I need this boys attention but only when he didn’t love me back. I.e burning his car. Honestly, I’ve been such a fan of Alasdair’s for so long. Prior to the shoot we talked on the phone for hours, I told him my story behind the lyrics and what I wanted to portray in the video. Then I let him take the reigns. I trust his creative vision immensely!

What does love mean to you?

To me, love is having nothing else in your life matter except for that person and that feeling. Love is indescribable!

You literally always look flawless, what is your beauty regimen?

First of all, thank you! Not true. Secondly, I try to wash my face every night, I NEVER sleep in makeup, sometimes I’ll forget to wash my face but I also never wear makeup unless I have to. Right now I’m actually using Millie Bobby Brown’s face wash and exfoliator, they sent me a lil gift package and I use it now every day! Florence by Mills, it’s honestly amazing. Her mask and under eye patches are also incredible! I think less is more, everyone’s skin is different, but for me, I definitely notice my skin feeling way healthier and cleaner when I wash my face lightly, put on moisturizer (love Weleda Skin Food) and then let it all breeeeathe.

What beauty products do you swear by when on the road?

I’m gonna need at least 8 bottles of pink hair dye!

What beauty item do you never leave home without?

Aquaphor, scrunchie, and I have this little water squirted syringe thing for my post-wisdom teeth upkeep. Idk if that counts as beauty but I’m not allowed to leave home without it? I’m a very minimalistic girl. It doesn’t take much to make me happy!

What TV show are you currently binge watching and what was the last book you read?

Big Little Lies, Fleabag, and obviously Euphoria! I also just am watching this show called One Strange Rock on Netflix, which is all about Earth’s secrets and wonders and strange beauties. It’s not only incredibly informative and interesting to watch, but it is also very sad to me, as global warming is rising at a rapid pace and we need to take action to save our beautiful planet! Shout out Greta Thunberg for stepping up to be our generation’s voice! (Everyone can make a change even if it’s small. No more plastic, cut down on animal produce, call your legislators and tell them to act on climate, reduce every day electrical use, reduce the amount of gasoline you burn, there are so many things you can do!!!!)

And the last book I read was Scar Tissue by Anthony Kedis. Very inspiring to say the least, I recommend to all.

What are you most excited about for your upcoming tour this fall?

I am so excited to be playing new music for my faaaaans! I’m excited to hang with my fans, dance with them sing with them cry with them all of the above!!!! I also love to hang with my band and crew – they are my family and we have the absolute best time together.

Who are your heroes?

My parents, Justin Vernon, Damien Rice, Stevie Nicks, Eddie Vedder, Mick Jagger, and Avril Lavigne

What advice would you give your 16-year-old self?

Worry less about what other people think. Have fun, it’s not the end of the world.

Since you grew up in LA, what are some of your favorite spots to hang with friends/to get away and feel at peace?

Malibu! I find the ocean so peaceful.

What goals do you have that you would like to conquer before your 20th birthday next year?

I DON’T KNOW. I’m out here just rolling with the flow baby. Ridin the wave workin my ass off yaaaa knowwwww! Huge goal for me honestly is to be able to RIP at the guitar. I wanna learn and learn!

What can we expect on your album? What is next for Charlotte Lawrence?

You can expect all the songs on the album to mean something to me. Music that I’ve made with the people I love, and I want to continue making great music and keep growing as a songwriter and as an artist.
