Google Wants the Female Emojis to Get Jobs

Ever notice how most of the emojis who actually do stuff are men?

In emoji-world, men are cops, detectives, construction workers, swimmers, surfers, cyclists, and Santa Claus.

The female emojis, meanwhile, are dancing and getting their hair and nails done. They’re also brides and princesses. And Google is having none of it.

Google has petitioned the Unicode Consortium — basically the emoji illuminati — to add 13 new emojis that depict women in “business and health care roles, in factories and on farms,” the New York Times reports. Sounds awesome, guys…

Joking aside, it would be great to see broader representation of what women do in the emoji world. As the New York Times previously pointed out in a column by Amy Butcher, “How was there space for both a bento box and a single fried coconut shrimp [in the latest emoji update], and yet women were restricted to a smattering of tired, beauty-centric roles?”

Either way, at least we have Kimojis, which have been all about women getting money from the jump.
