BABYFACE RAY WANTS TO SHOW HIS GROWTH AND MATURITY WITH THE KID THAT DID
Babyface Ray is arguably one of the biggest rappers to come out of Detroit and he shows no sign of slowing down anytime soon. His new album, “The Kid That Did” is a summary of his life as of late, while holding close his roots that has built the huge fan based that is consistently growing to this day. I got to chat with Babyface Ray about his new project and what he wants fans to take from it.
FEATURE INTERVIEW:
What is your earliest memory of being introduced to music?
My dad was into music, so he played a lot of rap and old school music.
When did you decide to start taking music seriously?
Probably like 2014-15 ish. I was in a group with some guys, you know Peezy and them, Damedot, I’m sure you’ve heard of those guys… So, after the city took a liking to our music, then it kinda got serious.
Even though your rap group Team Eastside went solo many years ago you all still are great friends & continue to make music together. How are yall able to maintain that bond all these years later?
It gets shakey sometimes because everybody be doing their own thing. Especially growing up and doing music together, we be needing reassurance from each other. But it’s cool, you know? Sometimes it’s not but the love still be the same.
Would you all do another Ghetto Boyz project or are you all past that?
I mean we almost did something this summer but it ain’t work out, so I’m sure we’re probably going to come together and do something eventually.
What do you want the biggest takeaway to be from “The Kid That Did”?
Growing and maturing. I want people to see that in me and my new music.
In your song legacy you talk about building a legacy before dying. What would you like your legacy to be?
I just really want to be remembered as somebody who was a good artist, person, hopefully a good CEO. Just good things said about me.
Detroit natives can appreciate Doughboy Clay on the hook of this song. What about this song made you pick him to feature on it?
I had the song for so long. But it was one of my favorite songs that I’d constantly listened to and get in the mood of appreciating myself. I kinda wanted a soulful, churchy vibe, but I’m like how do I capture that without getting an actual gospel singer?
I still listen to Doughboyz Cashout, and I thought about Clay, and I’m like, that would be hard if I get Clay on it. It’s easy to make the connection with Payroll and Quis, but I don’t think may saw Babyface Ray and Clay coming, so it was something fresh. Mixing our different sounds together.
What I love the most abut Detroit is how it molded me as a person the grit hustle and structure my upbringing in the Detroit really played a big part.
For anyone who’s never heard a Babyface Ray song, what’s the first song you’re playing for them and why?
That’s a tough question… Cause I like a lot of my songs. “Who Beat Is This” probably.
Since Galore has a huge women-based viewership, what song of yours would you play for a woman you’re just meeting?
Oh yeah, “#1 Fan” off top. I feel like that’s a good song for women. If a woman never heard of me and was like do you do music? I’d be like check me out and play #1 Fan. I think that’s a good introduction to me.
I have many favorites on your new album, but “Guardian Angel” currently has a hold on me. Do you believe everyone has a Guardian Angel? Who do you think yours is?
Yeah, I definitely believe in Guardian Angels, I grew up in the church and I’m spiritual. I think I have a few, my aunt, a few close friends that didn’t get to make it on the journey and are here to see me doing all of this.
Remembering conversations, it’s kinda like having a guardian angel, you know what I’m saying?
What are some of your Guardian Angels names?
Snoop, my auntie Shawn, my uncle Bubby, my grandma Maggie, it’s just so many names of people who have passed away. I feel like I have a lot of guardian angels.
Who’s your favorite fashion designer right now?
I wear a lot of stuff, but I think my favorite brand right now is Louis Vuitton.
What does being “high off life” mean to you?
To me it means being high off the lifestyle you created for yourself.
Now that the album is out everywhere how do you feel? When can we expect a tour?
Usually I’d be nervous, trying to figure out how they gone take it in, but I feel good right now. I feel motivated to keep going and staying consistent right now.
I think they gone announce the tour soon, but it will be announced this year.
