Slipmami Doesn’t Belong in a Box

Slipmami makes rap, but she refuses to let a single genre define her sound. Norwegian black metal, MPB, soul, blues, and the many branches of hip-hop are among the influences that fuel her artistry. For her, creativity needs room to expand without being confined by labels. Music entered her life unexpectedly, almost as a joke, and became one of her greatest sources of joy, as well as a path toward discovering her own artistic voice.

That same sense of freedom extends beyond music. A fan of indie games like Fran Bow and Sally Face, Slipmami is drawn to the contrast between sweetness and horror, a duality that has increasingly found its way into her writing through beautiful, damaged female characters. Moving between different mediums and worlds, the artist finds new ways to express her curiosities and push the boundaries of her creative vision.

At 26, Slipmami has already performed on the stages of major festivals and amassed millions of streams, building an audience that connects with her irreverent attitude and the unapologetic way she explores pleasure and sexuality in her music. Unafraid to provoke or challenge expectations, the rising star is carving out her own path, driven by curiosity and a desire to explore everything that sparks her imagination.

FEATURE INTERVIEW:

When did you discover your talent for music?

I’ve always loved artistic expression, and music has always been a passion of mine. But I didn’t believe in myself, and I couldn’t bring myself to call myself an artist because my self-esteem was so low. But there was no avoiding it—music came into my life unexpectedly. It started as a joke, just for fun, and became the thing that brings me the most joy in life.

Being a woman in Brazil’s rap scene also means taking up space and opening doors for others. How important is it for you to represent other women in this scene, and what would you still like to change about it?

I’d like to eliminate all the boxes and just make music, breathe creativity. Limiting yourself to a single genre won’t sustain that kind of expansion.

Beyond music, what other artistic expressions interest you and hold a special place in your life?

I love indie games like Fran Bow and Sally Face. I’m drawn to that contrast between sweetness and horror, and it’s been expanding into my writing. I’ve been developing beautiful, damaged female characters. Let’s see where it goes.

Is there a musical style you love listening to that might surprise people who only know Slipmami through your work?

(Laughs) I like music. Not to sound like I’m pretending to be something I’m not, but put on some Norwegian black metal, cloud rap, MPB, every subgenre of hip-hop, soul, blues… We’d be here all day.

What does your routine look like these days, balancing music, professional commitments, and your personal life? And what would a perfect day look like if you had no obligations or commitments?

I work out, do Pilates—I love stretching—and take singing lessons (I’m going to get better, I swear!). I’ve been focusing on my YouTube channel again, and I read… On a day off, I spend time with my family and see my friends. I love them. I’m playing Alice: Madness Returns and A Plague Tale: Requiem right now, and I love them so much.
