Why Trump’s Claims About Late Term Abortions are B.S.
If you watched last night’s debate at all, you probably remember the really graphic image that formed in your head after Trump started talking about late-term abortions.
Trump claimed that Hillary, if elected, will make ninth-month abortions legal. Well, that’s funny because they don’t exist. Donald said last night:
“I think it’s terrible if you go with what Hillary is saying… in the ninth month you can take the baby and rip the baby out of the womb of the mother just prior to the birth of the baby. Now, you can say that that’s okay, and Hillary can say that that’s okay, but it’s not okay with me. Because based on what she’s saying and based on where she’s going and where she’s been, you can take the baby and rip the baby out of the womb in the ninth month, on the final day. And that’s not acceptable.”
We’re going to break down his entire claim on late-term abortions and why it is a complete lie.
The idea that abortions “rip” the fetus from the mother is a complete myth. This OB/GYN even says that the word “rip” isn’t in their vocabulary.
“First of all, we don’t ‘rip’ anything in OB/GYN,” Dr. Jennifer Gunter told Huffington Post. “In surgery, we use sharp dissection and blunt dissection, but we don’t rip. Some women do tear during a vaginal delivery, but that’s not a doctor ripping the baby out. Even with a forceps delivery, I wouldn’t call it ripping. We also don’t rip tissues during c-sections.”
Another misconception that Trump tortured the general populous with last night was the argument that you can “rip the baby out of the womb in the ninth month, on the final day.”
Once again, this is no where near true because you literally cannot have an abortion on the last day of pregnancy. That would be called birth, you ass. Either the baby will be born alive, or stillborn, and even then the mother would have to go through an induced delivery. Nothing involving an abortion.
Yet another misconception that Trump is harping on with this anti-abortion platform is suggesting that all abortions are late-term ones. The truth is that ninety-two percent of abortions in the United States occur within the first 13 weeks of pregnancy, which is completely legal.
Of the 8% of abortions that happen after 21 weeks, 80% of them are because of birth defects found in the fetus. So this image of all women getting late-term abortions isn’t accurate in the least.
His statement suggests that women freehandedly make the decision, as if the women who decide to have late term abortions are doing it because they want to, like for fun or some shit. Generally, women are forced into the decision because the baby’s health is being risked if the pregnancy were to go to term.
One mom at 36 weeks found out that her child had two brain malformations, and she chose to end the pregnancy.
“What kind of mother is eight months pregnant and wants an abortion?” she asked. At one point when she thought that an abortion this late in the pregnancy might be illegal, she considered other options.
“The risks that I was willing to take to let this baby go in peace, in the way I believed she deserved — it’s terrifying,” she said.
Trump’s use of misinformation to scare the public into voting for him is not only outrageous, but dangerous. Staying informed and discerning what’s fact and what’s bull has been so important, especially in this election.
Maybe if Donald started paying attention to women beyond their pussies, he’d know a little bit more about pregnancy.
