Stop Taming Your Curls and Start Embracing Them

Running my hair straightener down each strand of hair, I hoped my curls would never come back.

Growing up, I was convinced that straight hair was more beautiful than curly hair, and because I was determined to be beautiful, I did everything I could to get rid of my curls. I straightened my hair so that I could look like every other girl, not realizing that uniqueness is what makes someone beautiful.

After years of torturing my hair, I gave up and realized that there was no way I could get rid of the mess on top of my head, so I began embracing my curls. I threw out countless straighteners, blow dryers, and anything else that could ruin my already drained hair begging to be revitalized. Because of the severe heat damage my hair had suffered, I was forced to chop it all off, and spend a significant amount of time nurturing my curls back to health. It was a long a strenuous journey, but I finally restored my curls to their maximum shine, volume, and length.

As I got older, I no longer wanted straight hair because everyone had it. I would not even settle for wavy hair. I wanted my bouncy curls more than anything because they are the real me. I began drowning my hair is all kinds of hair masks, treatments, oils, until it was back to normal.

While all hair types are beautiful, I had to learn to face the fact that straight hair just was not for me, and just like that, my perceptions of beauty expanded. My curly hair began to seem more beautiful to me, and I have not owned a hair straightener ever since.

Although finding the right products for curly hair can feel like an endless scavenger hunt, here are a few of my top picks for luscious locks.

Cantu Leave-In Conditioning Hair Repair Cream

This product is definitely my favorite, and while it works for all hair types, it is especially great for naturally curly hair. Because curly hair tends to be on the dryer side, the shea butter and argan oil provide the right amount of moisture for your locks without weighing them down.

LUSH Jasmine and Henna Fluff-Eaze

Hair masks are an essential part of every haircare routine, and curly hair, needing all the moisture it can get, benefits from the extra virgin olive oil and coconut oil which is another reason why I love this product.

Twisted Sista Curl Activator Creme

This is great product for curly girls who don’t have a lot of time to spend styling their hair in the morning. Lazy days no longer have to be bad hair days by running a generous amount of this creme through your locks. With coconut, almond, and avocado oils, this is my go-to product for maintaining my curls’ definition, wet or dry.

While curly hair can withstand many obstacles, taking the time to research ingredients, and finding the ones that best fit my hair type, significantly helped me when trying to decide which products to look for. With the approaching summer temperatures, moisturizing the hair is a priority for textured, curly hair. Maintaining a regular routine will keep curls from damaging while exposed to the sun and heat this season.

By sharing some of my favorite hair products, I aim to have every curly girl inspired to love herself, curls and all.
