On the new track, Mitchell said, “‘Jakky Boy!’ is more than just a song, it’s a personal anthem of liberation and self-acceptance. This indie rock track represents a moment of defiance against the pressures to conform, a celebration of individuality. It’s about embracing our flaws and quirks and finding strength in them. The song reflects my journey towards accepting myself as I am, and I hope it inspires others to do the same. It’s a shout-out to everyone who’s ever felt different or out of place – to own their uniqueness boldly and proudly.”
Ahead of the single’s release, Mitchell spoke briefly with Galore about the sonics of the single and its meaning.
INTERVIEW:
1. You’ve called “Jakky Boy” a “celebration of individuality”, could you speak to your personal journey of embracing yourself? Were there any particular experiences that led to the creation of the song?
“Definitely. My journey, like anyone else’s, has been filled with its share of challenges. One of the biggest struggles for me has been balancing the perception of time against differing opinions, and weighing my self-worth against how others may perceive me. For a long time, I sought validation from other artists, which was a significant part of my process. However, with the release of this new album, I’ve experienced a profound shift. I’ve found that sense of validation within myself, which has been incredibly liberating, both in my artistic expression and in my personal life.”
2. “Jakky Boy” leans heavily on instrumentation from horns and saxophones, which is a bit of a departure from your past works. What inspired you to bring those instruments into the mix, and what was it like working with a new sound? In this latest phase of my career, I approached the studio differently, setting aside the influences of other musicians that I usually keep in mind. Instead of drawing inspiration from particular artists or songs that I admire, I focused solely on the joy of creating the best music I could. We embraced a ‘no-holds-barred’ attitude – if something made us laugh or seemed over the top, we went with it, finding excitement in the spontaneity. The process took on a life of its own, and I sincerely hope that the fun and freedom we experienced while making this album shines through in the tracks, particularly in “Jakky Boy!”
