MEXICAN POP DUO VALGUR IS BREAKING AWAY FROM STANDARD CONVENTIONAL BANDS
Siblings either love or hate each other and in Valgur‘s case, they love making beautiful music together. The duo takes their Mexican culture as inspiration for their unique indie-pop sound that is making waves all around the world. In our new interview we got to know Elizabeth and Hugo Valdivieso a little better as well as what’s up next for them.
FEATURE INTERVIEW:
TALK TO US ABOUT HOW YOU FORMED THE BAND.
We are siblings. Our parents are Christian pastors and we started playing in the evangelical church at a very early age. Basically, the first stage of our musical training occurred in the praise group. Afterwards we started creating and recording our own songs and decided that it was time to find a name for the project.
WHAT LYRIC IN YOUR SONG HITS HOME HARDEST?
There is a song named “Hijos del Caos“. The theme refers to Jung’s psychoanalytic theories: “It is not possible to awaken consciousness without pain.” This song expresses the journey of mortality that is experienced in addiction, crossing the eternal fire and emerging unscathed from it, is something that Valgur dignifies, and not only applauds him, but also generates a new identity for those unfortunate beings; the marginalized, the excluded, those who have tried again and again, the cannon fodder, the scapegoat: the “Hijos del Caos”.
HOW WOULD U DESCRIBE YOUR SOUND?
We are POP!
HOW HAS MEXICO INSPIRED YOUR SOUND?
We were born in Juchitan, Oaxaca, cradle of the zapotec culture, surrounded by deep-rooted traditions. Our first album is called “Zapandú”, and it is an ode to our zapotec roots, set in the violent Mexico of 2017. “Armaggedon“, the second album is a very different narrative discourse…
HOW IS YOUR CREATIVITY DISRUPTING THE MUSIC SCENE?
We are a group that has been on tour since last year. For the execution of our live show, we took on the task of leaving aside the musical instruments, and created a staging with symbolic elements that summarized our narrative discourse: a Bible, a teddy bear, cloaks and a sword. With this we intended to break away from the standard of conventional bands and create an unusual way of approaching a musical concert.
WHO ARE YOUR IDOLS?
In music: Casiopea, Shakatak, Kool & The Gang, Charlie Parker, Chick Corea, Herbie Hancock, Yunko Yagami, George Benson, Jun Togawa…
In literature: Raymond Carver, Francisco Tario, Juan Rulfo, Katherine Mansfield, Anton Chejov…
Film Directors: Michael Heneke, Aki Kaurismaki, David Lynch, Ingmar Bergman…
WHATS NEXT FOR YOU IN 2024?
We are recording new album material, and for the first time we have a tour in the United States!
