Maestro Joyeros and the Craft of Couture Horology

In a workshop where Gothic chiaroscuro meets Japanese minimalism, the founder of Maestro Joyeros has weaving time, metal, and story into jewelry that behaves like sculpture and horology in disguise. The piece now touring the brand’s Los Angeles boutique began life as an audacious concept for J Balvin—a collaboration born of a former creative partner and a willingness to test limits.

It stands as a personal reminder that every experience—whether celebrated or arduous—carries a lesson, whether about craftsmanship or life itself. More than a pendant, the creation marks a milestone in haute horlogerie for Maestro Joyeros: the first sustained venture into integrating a modified watch movement into a jewelry masterpiece, balancing mechanical precision with artistic expression after countless hours of engineering, design, and devotion.

The designer’s gaze—clean, minimalist at first glance—unfolds into a richly detailed inner world, where architecture, storytelling, and display converge. This is not merely adornment but a dialogue between jewelry, art, engineering, and narrative, soon to be witnessed firsthand at the brand’s Los Angeles flagship.

FEATURE INTERVIEW:

Tell us the brand story. How did it start?

First and foremost, I want to make it clear that, in its essence, Maestros Joyeros is not a new company. We come from a family legacy rooted in craftsmanship, excellence, and the creation of jewelry with meaning. For generations, our family has been dedicated to producing exceptional jewelry, always believing that a piece should be more than an accessory—it should tell a story, celebrate a milestone, and become part of a person’s legacy. Every creation is designed to be unique and deeply personal.

For many years, we focused on manufacturing high-end jewelry for jewelers and luxury brands around the world. Then, in 2019, we asked ourselves a simple question: if we were already creating extraordinary pieces for other brands, why not create our own? That vision gave birth to Maestros Joyeros as a luxury house. Today, we combine generations of expertise with contemporary design, creating bespoke jewelry and masterpieces that reflect individuality, craftsmanship, and timeless luxury.

Who was your first big client, and who are your clients today?

Two of our first major clients were Poncho De Nigris and Eduin Caz of Grupo Firme, both of whom trusted our vision very early in our journey. Today, we are fortunate to work with a diverse clientele that extends far beyond the entertainment industry. Our clients include artists, actors, entrepreneurs, athletes, business leaders, and collectors from around the world.

At the end of the day, our ideal client is anyone who wants to immortalize a story through a work of art. We create for individuals who appreciate true luxury—not mass-produced luxury, but highly personalized luxury. People who value exclusivity, craftsmanship, rarity, and the emotional significance behind every piece.

What gemstone are you obsessed with at the moment, and why?

Diamonds—particularly fancy-colored diamonds. I find them absolutely fascinating because they combine extraordinary beauty with exceptional rarity. Their brilliance is remarkable, but what truly captivates me are their unique natural colors. No two stones are exactly alike, which makes each one feel deeply individual.

For collectors and connoisseurs seeking something truly distinctive, fancy-colored diamonds are among the ultimate symbols of exclusivity. They are incredibly rare, highly sought after, and possess a character that cannot be replicated. To me, they represent the perfect balance of artistry, nature, and luxury.

Who would be your dream client to create jewelry for?

Unfortunately, my answer is someone who is no longer with us: Michael Jackson. Beyond his artistic talent, he was a cultural phenomenon whose influence continues to transcend generations. He constantly pushed creative boundaries and left an extraordinary legacy that still inspires people around the world today. I believe few artists in history have had such a profound impact on music, culture, fashion, and entertainment. Designing a one-of-a-kind masterpiece for someone with that level of creativity and vision would have been an incredible honor.

Why expand to Los Angeles, and what are your plans for the future?

As I’ve often said, Los Angeles felt like the natural choice for our first U.S. boutique. It is one of the most cosmopolitan cities in the world—a place where culture is created, trends are born, and diverse communities come together to shape the future. What makes Los Angeles particularly special is that it was built by generations of hardworking people from around the world who came here pursuing opportunity and leaving a lasting legacy. That spirit resonates deeply with our own story.

Strategically, Los Angeles also provides the perfect stage to demonstrate that jewelry crafted in Latin America can stand alongside the finest luxury houses in the world. We are proud of our heritage, proud of our craftsmanship, and proud to showcase the level of artistry that exists in our region.

As for the future, we would love to continue growing our presence in Los Angeles with a second—and perhaps even a third—boutique. Beyond that, our ambition is to establish Maestros Joyeros in the world’s most influential luxury capitals, bringing our vision of bespoke high jewelry and exceptional craftsmanship to an international audience.

I’m currently wearing a piece that was originally created as an alternative concept for J Balvin in collaboration with a former creative partner. The piece serves as a personal reminder that every experience—whether successful or challenging—comes with a lesson. Some lessons are about craftsmanship, others about life. I’ll leave that story for another day.

From a technical and artistic standpoint, this project was a major milestone for Maestros Joyeros. For the first time, we ventured into the world of haute horlogerie, adapting and modifying a watch movement to integrate it seamlessly into a jewelry masterpiece. Achieving the perfect balance between mechanical precision and artistic expression required countless hours of engineering, design, and craftsmanship.

The design itself was inspired by Gothic architecture, while also reflecting the duality of the J Balvin we know: vibrant yet thoughtful, bold yet refined. The exterior presents a clean, almost Japanese-inspired minimalist aesthetic. However, once opened, the piece reveals an entirely different world—rich in detail, complexity, and character.

For us, this is much more than a pendant. It represents the intersection of jewelry, art, engineering, and storytelling. It is one of the masterpieces that will be showcased at our Los Angeles boutique, allowing visitors to experience firsthand the level of craftsmanship, innovation, and attention to detail that define Maestros Joyeros.
