FEATURE INTERVIEW:

No one can question that you’re a phenomenon! Your music is always in the charts and your name is everywhere. At what point did you realize that you had become a star of great magnitude, especially in terms of numbers?
I realized it when I started to see those big numbers and the constancy. But building a successful career, not just a successful song, takes time. It’s like a ladder, you don’t realize it, it doesn’t happen overnight. To outsiders, it may seem quick, but insiders feel the climb, step by step. Over time, you get used to the new realities of this growth.
On the new version of your latest album, you’ve released features with artists of different sounds. Do these collaborations happen out of affinity, strategy or a bit of both?
It’s more an affinity for the music, which reminds me of another artist I know and admire. With some people, I have an affinity and friendship; with others, it’s because of their timbre or the certainty that they will add to my music.

What is your favorite song to perform live?

Chico“. I love and appreciate this song, especially because it’s a modern-day “Bossa Nova”. The English version is also one of my favorites.

After dealing with the exposure of your personal life, you released a documentary that shares your intimacy and the challenges you had to overcome. How do you find the balance between what you choose to share with the public and what you prefer to keep private?

There was a time when I didn’t choose very much and, because of people’s speculation, I felt I had to expose my side. This confusion was created, both from the inside out and from the outside in and it became a mess. I couldn’t understand how much I was exposing myself and how many people were exposing me. I felt I needed to respond with the truth, but I understood that there is my truth and the truth that people want to believe.

Who is your favorite global pop star?
That’s a tough one, but I think it’s Michael Jackson!
Being a pop star demands a lot emotionally from the artist. Have you ever felt afraid to face the stage and the spotlight?
I’ve been afraid of both. I’ve felt more afraid of the spotlight than the stage. The stage is a place I’ve always dreamed of and set out to be.

Your art isn’t obvious; every time the public thinks they already know you, you come along and show them a new nuance. How do you manage to stay true to what you believe in, in the face of so many opinions, and at the same time bring a new breath to each work?
I’m very faithful to my art, which is abstract and open to many possibilities. I came from a wedding band and was hired because I’m very versatile. I’m faithful to what I believe in, and I believe in and like a lot of things. Over time, people have understood that this is where I come from, this way of looking at music outside the box. It’s natural for me. I do what I want, and I want a lot of things.
With social media, aesthetic pressure has increased a lot, especially for women. There’s always a new procedure, product and filter showing how people should look. Have you ever felt pressured? And how is your relationship with beauty?
It’s crazy how this culture and these aesthetic pressures drive us crazy. I’ve never hidden the procedures I’ve had a little Botox. I’ve always had a defined jawline and cheekbones, and I used to think it was beautiful, but now it makes me a little insecure because it’s something that’s started to be talked about a lot. I feel more insecure about my natural features than the things I’ve changed.

What do you usually do on your days off?
I travel abroad a lot, even for just four days. And I love staying at home with my cats and dogs – I have seven animals. I also like to play video games.
What’s the one piece that can’t be missing from your closet?
An oversized blazer, a tank top and comfortable Margiela shoes.

If you could have a superpower, which one would you choose and why?
Teleportation. I could do lots of things in different places around the world, get what I want much faster and rest much more. I could do a show or go anywhere and then be home to sleep.

Your fans around the world are looking forward to seeing you live. Are there any countries where you haven’t yet performed that you’d like to include on a tour?
Several countries. I’m going to tour next year in the USA, Latin America and other parts of Europe that I haven’t visited yet. I think that now, with some songs in English and Spanish, I want more people to get to know me.

What’s your dream features?
Rosalía and Billie Eilish.
