Kate Clover Announces New LP,Shares “Like A Domino” Single + Video
A rising star in the punk underground, Kate Clover recently announced her new record, The Apocalypse Dream, due out April 5th, 2024. Following the release of “Damage Control”, which came alongside her LP announcement last month, today sees a video-only release of her raucous second single, “Like A Domino”. The video, directed and edited by Clover, spoofs a late-night talk show performance, and sees her and a cadre of backup dancers broadcast their new dance, “The Domino” to the world.

Speaking on the origins of “Like A Domino”, Clover said, “I overheard a conversation where a woman told her friend she “played him like a domino”. Intrigued by this sentiment I wrote the chorus with the phrase. I like the innuendo it exudes. With this theme in mind, I enlisted my choreographer friend Sandi Denton of Rated Z dancers to create an original dance to accompany the song, titled “The Domino”. It’s a nod to the twist, the mashed potato and the Loco-motion. I wanted this song to be a garage rock banger that gets people up on their feet and prod some fun.”
Clover has quickly gained a reputation as an explosive live performer and highlighted as one to watch in 2024. Fresh off a busy 2023 touring schedule, which included a North American tour supporting The Hives, select dates with Superchunk, and Fucked Up as well as her debut European tour with many sold-out shows.

Exclusive Interview:
The video for this is super unique— what gave you the idea for the talk-show setting, and how was it working with the choreography?
I’ve always wanted to make a video with choreography. I love fad dances in popular culture, such as, the twist, the mash potato, the watusi. I think that’s an overlooked aspect of music and really fun.The concept came from a fake news show I run on my social media called KCTV. It’s a parody news show. I feel as a modern musican we all have our own channel, we are a channel! I like making fun of that concept.
You’re also a bit of an auteur, having directed and edited the video. How was that experience? Would you like to continue working in those roles for your future projects? It’s a lot of work but I wanted this video to capture the energy we have while performing live. I don’t think about being an auteur really it’s more out of necessity and deadlines. This needed to come together fast. I enjoy the visuals one can create to accompany a song. That part has always been fun for me.
As for the track itself, “Like A Domino”, is quite a raucous song. Could you speak on how it came together sonically?
It was written late at night after I had been out. I wouldn’t say I was sober. I woke up to an almost complete demo and wrote the lyrics in the morning. I have phrases that live in my mind for a while and I had heard a girl say she “played him like a domino”. Intrigued by the innuendo I made that phrase the chorus of the song. No idea what she meant by that but I gave it my own meaning. The song feels like the night out I had before writing it, fun!
