Eric Sedeño: The Comedian Redefining Content and Living a Little Girl’s Dream
Briefly introduce yourself to Galore readers.
I’m Eric Sedeño, a content creator on TikTok and Instagram. I’m also launching a new podcast called “Wild Wild Web“.
What were you like as a child growing up in Texas?
I was reserved and shy until you became a close friend. While I was a little loud, I think I was hiding parts of myself. People don’t expect it now, but I was more introverted, though still crazy, especially with close friends.
When did you start developing your more outgoing personality?
It started around 18, when I came to terms with being gay. Exploring that part of myself in college made me more authentically loud. Moving to New York was key. People don’t care what you look like or how you act, so I really stepped into myself. I always had the personality, but I didn’t express it so loudly until I had the freedom. Living in Texas, I was always close to family, and I think that closeness made me fear being myself. New York was a big moment for me. I explored a new version of myself and stopped holding back. New York has that magic where it’s like a weapon with two pointy ends, which is Spanish for “nobody cares.”
Where does your particular sense of humor come from?
My dad’s funny, and I stole a lot of my humor from him. He’s a jokester who knows how to work a room. Also, Trixie and Katya’s YouTube show really altered my humor and brain chemistry. It was my first exposure to drag queens just talking to a camera.
Was there a moment you realized storytelling or performing would be part of your life?
I went to school for advertising, thinking I’d be a graphic designer, but I wanted to be an art director. The key difference is the art director creates the idea, and the graphic designer executes it. The most valuable thing I learned in college was how to develop an idea and understand why a story resonates. I think the strongest content tells a story, even if it’s just a joke. College taught me the value of crafting and conveying an idea.
What was the first piece of content that changed your life?
It was a video called “I went to the breakup.” I’ve told this story a million times: I got a mullet, a mustache, and this new intimidating look. I joined a Zoom call for work and made a tape about how I’m intimidating now, but I’m really the opposite. People liked it! It was a discovery point that helped people become interested in me.
Have you felt the pressure of standing out among so many content creators?
Absolutely, for a whole year after quitting my job. As an earth sign, it made me feel unstable. I was constantly second-guessing myself. Comparison is the thief of joy, but it’s unavoidable. It’s hard not to look at people doing better and wish you were doing that, too. But I’ve found my own way online, and it’s working for me. I’m not immune to those feelings, but they’re less prevalent.
How would you describe your content in one sentence?
I’m just living a little girl’s dream.
Who are your influences?
Veronica is cool, who just got cast on SNL. Also, Benito Skinner, Benny Drama, Quinta Brunson, and long-term influences like Amy Poehler, Tina Fey, and Jane Krakowski.
You’re acting now too. Tell us about that.
I’m interested in the opportunities that are opening up. I’ve been taking acting classes and it is challenging but fun.
What are some of your goals for the next few years?
I hope my podcast is successful, and it opens doors and friendships. I hope to get some TV moments, even if it’s not my own show. I also want to take a writing class to write something longer than 60 seconds.
What would you tell your past self, the kid who wanted a wife and kids?
I’d tell him, “You’re a star, and it’s going to happen for you. Believe in yourself no matter what.”
Do you have a mantra you live by?
“You’re lucky, and good things always happen to you.” I repeat that to myself every day.
