Emma Cole’s “ANALOG GURL”: Feminist Vibes, Nostalgic Rhythms

How can three songs encapsulate a lifetime of longing? For Emma Cole, it must have been a mission to channel her love for nostalgia into music that resonates out of the personal and into the universal. An appeal to all souls who long for a more magical and even innocent point of view – unapologetic rose-tinted glasses with a purpose.

Now, with the release of her latest EP, “ANALOG GURL,” Emma Cole embarks on a profound exploration of womanhood, merging crisp, retro soundscapes with intentional, raw emotion. This project marks the first installment of a trilogy centered around the themes of The Past, The Present, and The Future, with the noble intent of guiding us through a journey of self-exploration and the rediscovery of hidden memories.

The trifecta opens with the incredibly catchy yet awe-inspiring feminist anthem “HOLLOW,” born from the turmoil surrounding the controversial Texas Abortion Ban, and carried by a warm, subdued beat. In contrast to these empowering vibes, the second track, “PARALLEL,” delves into the theme of loss, exploring how different deaths can evoke similar emotions. With its beautiful acoustic guitar and a terse, snappy beat reminiscent of a teardrop, this song pays homage to Psychic Love’s former frontwoman and Emma Cole’s friend, Laura Peters, who tragically passed away in 2019.

But perhaps the true standout track, “WE COULD RIDE,” was inspired by an unexpected outreach from a former partner—the father of her late child—prompting her to confront long-buried feelings. This song encapsulates her personal growth, reflecting on her earlier work while signaling a courageous leap into a new chapter of her life. With “ANALOG GURL,” Emma Cole is not merely creating music; she is fostering a movement of empowerment and authenticity that strikes an important and ever-timely chord in today’s world.

Emma Cole’s debut EP, “If You Don’t Holler, No One Will Hear”, earned her the opportunity to open for fellow East Coast rocker Lauren Ruth Ward during a European tour in 2019. After a four-year period of deep reflection amidst a challenging political climate for women in America, Emma Cole emerged with a renewed sense of purpose, recognizing that her artistry has always been a voice for women, and with this new EP, she continues to prove that to the world.
