R&B Singer CymcoLé Is Not Playing Around

Singer CymcoLé knows what it’s like to throw yourself completely into your work, and even though she is the daughter of hall-of-fame baseball player Barry Larkin, this girl rides the coattails of no one.

She previously released a pretty epic music video for her song “Bombs Away,” which she not only sings in, but shows us her killer dance moves and looks so fiercely fire, it’s not even funny.

CymcoLé is continuing to build her empire by stacking those talent bricks one on top of the other, and has just released her new single, “Shadows,” from her debut EP of the same name, set to be released later this year.

The track is about CymcoLé’s musical journey from child star to becoming an independent artist who can stand on her own. It features simplistic dreamlike synthesizers with melodic raw and vulnerable vocal harmonies and meaningful lyrics.

From epic tunes like “Bombs Away” to moody tracks like “Shadows”, this girls got us covered and is one to watch rise to fame.

Check out “Shadows” below, and then peep the Q&A with CymcoLé to read about her makeup tips and fave fashion designers, from Yeezy to Fenty!

Let’s start with your full name and any nicknames.

My name is Cymber Nicole Larkin but I go by CymcoLé. Most people just call me Cym 😉

Do you have a favorite quote or mantra?

My favorite quote is “To whom much is given, much is required.” I live by it.

Who are some of your influences?

Some of my musical influences are Michael and Janet Jackson, Aaliyah, Rihanna, Selena, and Beyonce. I’ve always wanted to be a great performer so I’ve studied the works of the greats.

Tell us about your sound.

I would describe my sounds as pop/R&B with Caribbean and trap influences. My music is very rhythmic and has a lot of bounce. It’s vibey lol.

The music vid for “Bombs Away” is pretty epic — lots of killer dancing and amazing fashion. How did that all come together? Did you come up with the concept for it?

My sister and I came up with the concept for the “Bombs Away” video. As soon as I recorded the song I knew it was going to be the first video off the project. We wanted to create something edgy, bold, and powerful. My sister, Brielle, is my creative director/stylist so she handled getting everyone’s outfit together. Me and my choreographer, Brian Drake, had about 2 weeks to get the choreography done before. We held auditions for the 6 female dancers. Once we cast them, we had 3 rehearsals and then shot the video 2 days later. This was my way of coming out strong and showing people I’m not playing around.

If “Shadows” were on a movie soundtrack, where do you think it would fit best? What type of scene?

If “Shadows” was set to a scene, it would consist of a shy girl looking in the mirror and trying to put on her own make up for the first time because the song is about finding yourself and overcoming challenges that stand in your way. It’s about having fight and drive to become the person you want to be.

What inspired the song — is it about anyone specific or any specific situation?

After I decided that “Shadows” was going to be the name of my EP, my team and I decided that I needed to create a song to describe the title. “Shadows” is about my journey growing up and how I am creating my own name for myself. I want people to know me for my music not just as the daughter of a hall of fame baseball player.

What other music are you obsessed with right now?

I listen to a little bit of everything. I love pop, hip hop, R&B, Caribbean, and trap music. I’m all about vibes and moods so it really depends on how I feel at the moment. If I can vibe with it then it’s on my playlist.

Give us your beauty secrets. Fave products to get that on-point look?

YAY!! Okay so my most favorite makeup products are the Anastasia Beverly Hills dipbrow pomade, and the That Glow glow kit. Nyx cosmetics Tinted brow mascara. Morphe Brushes 35O palette and every single ColorPop matte lipstick there is lol. I would have to say my secret makeup tip is…. expensive isn’t always the best.

Let’s talk fashion, what is your current go to concert outfit? Shoes? Makeup look? Hair vibe?

My go-to concert outfit would most likely be a bodysuit or crop top with some baggy jeans and some stilettos or sneakers. I’m low-key obsessed with Adidas so most of my things are from there. I normally do a warm eye with my contour, highlight and matte lipstick. My hair is normally half up and half down, in a bun with bangs, in braids or parted down the middle straight with a dad hat. Sunglasses! omg I love my sunglasses. My favorite pair are rose gold and shaped like hexagons. I love mini backpacks and little wallets so I’m not really into huge purses and totes but it really just depends on the day 🙂

Any favorite fashion designers or clothing?

I loveeeee Kanye’s Yeezy line. I like the whole concept of the undone done look. Love Rihanna’s new Fenty line. I also like Hood By Air, Betsy Johnson, Milano Di Rouge, and many many more. I have a couple designers that I work with personally for my show outfits, B James and McQuerry Designs. My sister and I are actually working on our own clothing line called #SHDWS which I’m super excited about.

Do you follow any YouTubers religiously? Follow any makeup tutorials or cooking shows?

There are a couple people that I follow for make up, hair, and nails like, Patrick Star, Bretman Rock, Manny Gutierrez, Jeffree Star, Barbie Guts, Tokyo Styles, and Tony’s Nails. I follow Buzz Feed for cooking videos and other DIY projects.

Watch any reality shows as a guilty pleasure?

I use to watch “Bad Girls Club” and I watch “Keeping Up With The Kardashians” sometimes, but I’m not really into reality TV like that. I like watching sports and movies and Netflix’s, lol but my most favorite thing to watch is HGTV. I’m a huge fan of house hunting and decorating.

Who’s your celebrity crush?

So this might sound a little funny lol but my celebrity crush is Captain America. Whenever I watch The Avengers I get so happy and excited when he’s winning his fights.

What do you hope to accomplish this year? Where do you think you’ll be in a year?

I really want to grow my fan base and continue touring. I want my music to reach new ears and for people recognize my talents. I feel like with the team I have behind me and the support I have I could be on the charts within a year.

Most embarrassing thing that’s happened to you while on tour or while performing?

I was performing in ATL at the A3C Festival on the HipHop Weekly soundstage and it was my first time performing in Atlanta, so I was super excited. I was halfway through my performance and I looked down at the stage after one of our dance break and saw that the platforms that made up the stage were separating. One of my dancers almost slipped through the stage! Then they pushed the stage back together while we were in the middle of the second to last song and I almost fell off. Then to top it all off lol, the music cut out and started all the way from the beginning again. I looked at my dancers and the DJ with the funniest face but we just tried to keep the show going. lol.

What do you love most about making music and being a performer?

My favorite part about being an artist is performing. I love the feeling of being on stage. I feel so free and in control of myself and I love seeing people’s reactions. I love that fact that there are no rules to creativity so music allows me to be open and my true self.

We’ve heard your album is set to drop later this year — what are you most excited about for people to hear/learn about you?

I’m super excited for people to hear how much I’ve grown as an artist and how versatile I am with my music. I want people to connect with the words I’m saying because they are all real life scenarios and they appeal to all demographics.

What’s next for you? Is there an upcoming tour?

I actually just have been added to some dates on the Tory Lanez “I Told You” tour. I’m super excited to be on my first tour with such an amazing artist. Our styles are very similar so I think it’s going to be an amazing opportunity for me to gain exposure and fans. I’m also working on some new music with super producer Bangladesh, and releasing more music & videos so stay tuned.
