How To Copy Rihanna’s VMA Outfits On A Budget
Last night’s MTV VMAs was less fun than it usually is. I mean, there were barely any boys there. But one thing that didn’t disappoint was Queen Rihanna and her many outfit changes throughout the night.
Ri Ri didn’t do the usual single performance. Instead, she took the stage a number of times with hits like “Work,” “Stay,” and “Rude Boy.” As the 2016 winner of the MTV VMAs Video Vanguard Award, she got to do whatever she wanted. And it was #awesome!
But aside from giving us a fun show, Rihanna slayed us with her chic-yet-cool outfits. Obviously, we want them all. And if you’re as chill as we think you are, you probably do too. Here’s how to copy all 4 of Rihanna’s VMA outfits on a budget… just in time for back to school.
Rihanna’s first look was a Hood by Air bodysuit, pink thigh-high boots, a strangely flattering corset, and red shades.
This look is a hard one to copy, I won’t lie to you people. But the key to achieving it is actually just thinking about monochromatic pieces that you can style together. Nastygal’s high-waisted blush mini is a good place to start. Pair it with a bubblegum colored Bobi tee, Daisy Street pink velvet booties, and finish it off with some mirrored sunnies. You’ll feel AND look like a popstar… promise.
Rihanna’s second look consisted of trousers over fishnet tights, a fur-lined bra top, embellished black pumps, and a do-rag. This is actually pretty easy to DIY. But if you’re lazy like me, you can also shop the look for less.
Spanx makes cozy fishnets that you can layer a baggy pair of leather bottoms over. Unfortunately, fake leather is obvious and real leather is expensive – so that’d be a splurge. Jeffrey Campbell makes chic, sparkly heels. And you can wear any white crop top if I’m being honest — I like this one. If you’re super white, my advice would be to opt out of the do-rag.
Legit everything Rihanna wore was super expensive, including a black bodysuit, a baggy black tee layered over it, a blazer with shoulder pads, some hip-high boots, and layered gold chains to die for.
But don’t fret! Nasty Gal makes some sexy hip-high boots, Theory designed the most flattering bodysuit ever, Topshop tees are soft and cheap, ASOS blazers look expensive, and ASOS also makes an all-in-one gold chain necklace that gives you the same layering vibe.
If you can’t afford Rihanna’s Alexandre Vauthier haute couture collared gown with a grommet belt, it’s really okay.
House Of Sunny Luxe Casual Coat is a trench-dress that you can actually wear outside. And if you’re not into the wrap around belt that comes with the jacket, you can always switch it out with a rocker-esque studded belt.
Go and be your baddest self!
