BB ASUL IS CONTRIBUTING SENSUAL SADNESS TO THE LATIN MUSIC SCENE

Isabela Terán also known as BB Asul is disrupting the Latin music scene with her unique sound, beautiful full figure and unique fusion of various music genres. The Argentinean singer sat down with us to discuss music, her culture and what to expect from her new music coming in the near future!

FEATURE INTERVIEW:

Talk to us about where the name BB ASUL comes from.

A friend named me BB ASUL! I had blue hair, and I was a little younger than the rest of the group, so Ca7riel started calling me blue baby.

When did you start creating music and how do you feel your sound has changed over the years?

I have sung since I was a child, but I started making my own music in 2019. I was really depressed, I needed something to get me out of that place, that would give me a reason to live.

In that moment I just wanted to make music, I didn’t care about genre or quality of sound, so I worked in any way possible. Now I get to choose what I want to do and how we’re doing it!

I really feel my sound is getting more and more like the music I like; it changes all the time but every song I love more than the one before.

How are you disrupting the Latin music scene?

The Latin music scene is really wide, a lot of things are happening and mostly in Argentina, where we have so much incredible music and artists.

I think my place in all of this is some kind of sensual sadness contribution. I don’t sing about partying; I don’t sing about money or success either. I write about stuff that aches me bad and sometimes that stuff is really hot too.

What has been your favorite collaboration to date?

My favorite collaboration was with my dad. He has his own string quartet and, in my song, “Mar” he wrote, and they played the most beautiful arrangements, that made the song what it is.

Your album PURA dropped last December; talk to us about the album and what songs are your fave on it.

My album PURA was the most absolutely real fucking thing I could ever have done. I broke up with a narcissist man and I needed to get all my pain out, and I did!

We produced it with La Finesse and Manuel Schaller in Oídos Contentos studio. It was such a great experience working with my friends, getting to work on every single detail just the way I wanted. I love that album.

My favorite song right now is “Otro día“. I wrote it for my best friends. I really wanted to die, and they didn’t let me, so I wrote them a song.

How did you come up with the name PURA?

I wanted to talk about water, and how water and sadness are related in so many ways… And I made a song that says “nunca tomaste una así tan pura” (you never took one like this, so pure) so that gave us the name.

“I’m A Slut” is such a girl power anthem! Tell us about this song and the sluttiest thing you have ever done!

Omg, I love that song so much! It has two collabs that I wanted for so long: EMJAY and Lgante. I’m really proud of us for making a song that presents us for what we are: sluts.

Hmm, I think the sluttiest thing I have ever done is actually having sex for money, before I made music at all!

#1 red flag when dating?

Love bombing. Hear me out. If he loves you after ONE DATE, run. Only exception is if you are lesbians… Also, just men in general are red flags.

What lyric from your new album hits the hardest for you?

I really love the one we made with Angela Torres; it’s called “Tu mitad“. Tt has one lyric that says: “el único color que conozco es el de la luz de tu habitación, caigo me despierto y me acuerdo que no dormí con vos aunque soñé con vos. mi cielo si me voy cuídame tu mitad de nosotros dos.”

(The only color I know is the light in your room, I fall, I wake up and I remember that I didn’t sleep with you although I dreamed of you. My dear, if I go, take care of your half of the two of us).

What song on the album should a first time BB Asul fan listen to?

I think that the one called “Breaking Bad” is a good introduction! In that song I call myself a crazy Sanrio girl who will ruin your life, and it’s kinda true. It’s not an essentially sad song but it has a melancholic aftertaste. Thats my own “introducing me” Nick Jonas moment.

Who are your SHEROES?

I love Bjork, Billie Eilish, Amy Winehouse and Lana Del Rey. I also love Rosalía and Mitski.

My first introduction to girl music ever was Avril Lavigne, Evanescence and Paramore. They are all so cool and I learn from them every day of my life.

Doja Cat is amazing also, along with Rihanna and Ariana Grande. I love BoyGenius and Benee.

I’m a really big fan of Vivianne Westwood, Sofía Coppola, Lucrecia Martel, Idea Vilariño and Alfosina Storni are such inspirations too.Of course I might be forgetting people but I just love girls so much!

What is one item you keep in your bag always?

Perfume and red lipstick. I don’t leave my house without them.

What is your beauty philosophy and how do you plan to break barriers?

I think that beauty isn’t tangible. You are beautiful when your soul is, things are beautiful for reasons we don’t understand. And even when you feel the most awful you are gorgeous to somebody else.

I feel that beauty standards are just ways of keeping us in some kind of mental prison that we can’t escape. You can’t think of revolution if you are on a diet.

My dream is that women everywhere stop feeling bad about themselves and we can all feel freer. Me being plus size and living in Argentina I really feel the difference of opportunities between me and my skinny friends, some people really see us like secondhand humans, and we can’t give up because of that. We have to keep doing our thing until our haters either die or accept it.

What is next for you in 2024?

More music is coming! I have a punk fantasy that I’m making come true soon. I really hope you guys like it.

And also shows! I’m playing live in Buenos Aires before the year ends. I’m really excited about it!
