Why Alison Wonderland Wears Big Shirts and Biker Shorts

Alison Wonderland is an Aussie native dominating the electronic world.

With an iconic look and a cult-like following, she has music lovers swooning. After spending time kicking back in her glamorous trailer at Ultra Music Festival filled her all-Aussie squad, Alison opened up about how gender doesn’t define her, or her music.

In the q+a below, Alison gives beauty tips and advice on how to make it in the growing electronic world.

Galore: Does your gender have an impact on your career?

I mean, earlier on when I started it wasn’t fashionable to be a DJ or producer, it wasn’t as commercial. When I was playing at underground clubs I found I was judged. It’s part of the reason I still wear big T-shirts when I play and GoPros over my hands, to show that I’m really live mixing. It was sad that I had to do that because I was getting doubted. But overall, it pushed me to do better, go harder, sit down, and practice new tricks.

What are the advantages of being a female musician?

I try not to make it an issue. It’s neither a disadvantage nor an advantage. The less I speak about my gender, the less it’s made an issue. I don’t really try to take me being a female musician into consideration when I’m mixing or making a track. Usually, I don’t bring my sex into my playing.

Do you have any pre show rituals?

I have to chew green gum. I jump around in a little spot by myself. I don’t like to be touched or spoken to before I perform.

Any tips for on the road dating?

Date someone who understands touring.

What are your beauty rituals while on tour?

I drink lots of water. It’s important not to get f*cked up every night. I quit smoking. I swear by Elizabeth Arden 8 Hour Cream. During bus tours there’s no shower, so dry shampoo and makeup remover wipes are important. I only get to shower when I get to the venue!

Do you like to get drunk before your shows?

I used to drink a little bit during my shows, but for this tour I’ve only drank a few times and I feel really good.

Any makeup and beauty looks you couldn’t live without?

Good eyebrows and concealer. I preach eyebrows and eyelashes. When I’m onstage I never want to worry about what I look like. I’m going to get sweaty and I’m going to make a silly face. It’s important that I’m able to let go and be myself.

Who are your biggest musical inspirations?

DJ AM’s mixes are really big influences of mine. They took me on a journey without feeling jagged. A-Trak is another influence of mine. So is DJ Easy. My biggest producing influencers are the Knife and Hudson Mohawk.

Your style seems to be a trademark! Most people think you perform with no pants on.

I wear biker shorts underneath! My usual on-stage look is an oversized t-shirt, thigh high socks, creepers or platform sneakers, and overalls.
