The Nostalgic Tension of D’Arcy’s “Marlboro 27’s”

“Marlboro 27’s,” the new single by singer-songwriter and DJ D’Arcy, opens with a story shaped by breakups and new beginnings, set against tense music that builds toward something intense and unexpected. It’s a sad, melancholic track that feels ideal for a road trip, a morning run, or a moment of solitary reflection.

“‘Marlboro 27’s’ explores the place between sadness/nostalgia about a past relationship and the excitement of developing feelings for someone new,” says the artist, who stays true to her techno and house roots while moving away from the dance floor this time to embrace a more introspective approach through a theme anyone can relate to.

The song is accompanied by a music video filmed in a dark motel room and a gas station. In the video, director Audrey Cicerello alternates intense contrasts between light and shadow with a chroma-key effect that appears when memories of the ex figure creep in.

“The quick cuts throughout the video establish an unreliable timeline, as we are never quite sure what is a memory and what is actually real. The ex-figure, played by Alexia Bosch, appears throughout the video, though she is never actually there. Her presence is tempting, like a lit cigarette, but ultimately a figment of my memory,” D’Arcy shared.

“Marlboro 27’s” draws on the wealth of experience D’Arcy has gained in the studio and onstage, where she has skillfully blended the precision of synthesizers and techno’s dark percussive sounds with house music’s warm groove and enveloping bass lines, creating a distinctive sound that has earned her a distinctive presence in the independent music scene.
