Naya Rivera Just Revealed She Got An Abortion On a Day Off From ‘Glee’

Maybe your nerdy best friend tricked you into watching an episode of “Glee” one time, or maybe you were that nerdy best friend and “Glee” was your life for a hot second, but it doesn’t take a super fan to know the kind of wholesome reputation the show had.

For fuck’s sake, it was about a high school a capella group who made a point of accepting everybody and not being mean to each other. It doesn’t get more after school special than that.

Of course, behind the scenes, it was a different and less squeaky clean story.

In 2013, Cory Monteith, one of the show’s leads, died from a lethal overdose of heroin and alcohol, earlier this year Mark Salling, another lead, was indicted on child pornography charges, and back in 2010, Naya Rivera spent one of her days off from the show getting an abortion.

Not that getting an abortion is the same as being caught with child porn on your laptop or overdosing, but they’re all subjects that would inspire a different kind of after school special.

Naya Rivera, who’s about to publish her first memoir at the ripe old age of 29, Sorry Not Sorry: Dreams, Mistakes and Growing Up, revealed to People that a few weeks after she split from her now-husband Ryan Dorsey, she learned she was pregnant.

At the time, having the child just wasn’t an option and Rivera decided not to tell him and to use one of her days off to terminate her pregnancy.

“It was very scary to open up about everything,” Naya told People. “It’s not something a lot of people talk about, but I think they should. I know some people might read it and say, ‘What the Hell?’ But I hope someone out there gets something out of it.”

Who knew the “Glee” stars would still be teaching us such valuable lessons even after the show went off the air?
