Nick Jonas dropped a tracklist and title of his upcoming new album Last Year Was Complicated on Twitter last night, as well as a series of tweets detailing his inspiration for his new work. Jonas tweeted a lot about heartbreak, vulnerability, and regret, all ideas present in his just-released music video, titled “Close,” featuring Tove Lo. You know Tove Lo—she sings this song.
“When I first started making it I thought I knew what it would be about. Then I had a breakup,” Jonas tweeted, probably in reference to his high-profile relationship with Olivia Culpo. “It then became very clear what this thing would be about. And that I would need to dig really deep. Shit is too real sometimes. Reliving some of these real life experiences through this music is hard. But I know it’s important that I do it. I want to be an open book in my art. The first song you’re gonna hear tomorrow night is about how I literally can’t open up and be vulnerable with someone.”
The video features Jonas and Tove Lo sitting in chairs opposite one another, then sliding further and further away, until they break free from their constraints—and clothing— eventually becoming “close.”
Last Year Was Complicated is out June 10 via Island Records, and the track is available for download on iTunes. Check out the video for “Close” below.
