PHOTO DIARY: Summer in Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brooklyn
Between profound humidity and untimely Nor’easters, we New Yorkers are prone to lose sight of how beautiful Summers here really are. But worry not: photographer Alexander-Julian Gibbson is here to remind us of how every Summer day in NYC ought to be.
While the entire city skips to a slightly different beat throughout the Summer months, Brooklyn’s magical Bed-Stuy neighborhood completely comes to life: food festivals, loud music, and sliced mangoes on the street are all crucial components of a quintessential Brooklyn Summer.
“I’ve been looking forward to Summer in Brooklyn all year,” Gibbson explains, “so I wanted to encapsulate the Summer vibe. Especially given the fact that’s New York and Summer can be taken away from us in the blink of an eye, (see current forecast).”
On the fashion: “I’m in love with shiny pieces this season, for both men and women. I pulled the pieces originally with the idea of pairing them with simple styling to tone them down, but then saw the beauty in showing them together and rethinking exactly what it means to stand out.”
“I wanted it to allude to the 90s. Summer in Bed-Stuy, in the 90s, is like peak BK to me– sweltering heat, block parties, loud music, and very very black.”
