NOGA EREZ IS SHOWING YOU HOW SHE’S THE VANDALIST

Israeli singer Noga Erez has recently released her new album “THE VANDALIST” which features 16 alt-pop tracks filled with kick ass sass and vibes. We caught up with Noga to get a glimpse into her creative process, what fans can expect from her 3rd studio album and much more!

FEATURE INTERVIEW:

Talk to us about THE VANDALIST and what it means to you.

THE VANDALIST is choosing to be that person who tells things like they are, even if it bursts some people’s sweet little bubble.

What song on the album hits home the hardest?

Right now, it’s “Smiling Upside Down“. This song is one of our bigger achievements lyric wise, I feel. Usually, our lyrics tend to be more conceptual and free form. Here we have storytelling which I love in a song.

Who are some of your biggest musical influences, and how have they shaped your sound?

Radiohead is a huge influence for songwriting and sound. PJ Harvey’s music made me really want to touch on deeper level but also global issues in my songs. Kendrick Lamar and Missy Elliott for lyrics & performance. And so so so many more…

Can you walk us through your songwriting process? Do you start with lyrics, melody, or a particular concept?

I work with my partner and collaborator Ori Rousso on all of the songs. We really don’t have one method. Our go to place is beat making. Starting with building a sonic universe and going from there. But we’ve been regularly trying to break that habit and today I feel we are doing things more freely, working with whatever sparks inspiration.

You’ve collaborated with various artists. Is there anyone in particular you dream of working with, and why?

It is my dream to work with Pharrell. I think there’s something about how he works that brings out interesting and new parts in artists. Besides the music, I love his philosophy of life and how he sees collaborating as a way to bring out the best in the person in front of you.

How do you prepare for a live performance, and what do you hope to convey to your audience during your shows?

I warm up before every show. Usually, we do a small set list meeting to discuss what is happening in the specific set and finding new moments. With the intention to give people a full experience with a range of emotions, like a little trip.

How has your Israeli background influenced your music and artistic vision?

Like any other place, the fact that I was brought up in Israel helped shape my identity as a musician with music from Israel being a huge part of my influences early on in my life.

Israel is a unique place to grow up and live in. It comes with its challenges, especially in this past year. I believe that is a driving force that keeps me on my toes and makes me have a proper honest look at life and reality quite often. But maybe that’s not unique at all…

Are there any upcoming projects or new music that you’re particularly excited about and can share with us?

I was in Europe doing some promo for “THE VANDALIST” as things in Israel have really escalated. Our flight got canceled and we’ve decided to stay for the time being. It’s not easy being far from home when things go down in that way. But we’ve also found peace and quiet here where we are staying – in a way I haven’t experienced in a very long time. Immediately the first thing that emerged was an urge to make music. We’ve being doing that constantly for the last couple of weeks and I think we have a very raw and interesting start of our new project.

What advice would you give to young musicians trying to find their voice and break into the industry?

Take care of your mental health before anything else. It can get rough and tricky to find yourself in this world, especially as an artist. Be good and forgiving to yourself.

How is your creativity disrupting the music industry?

I naturally don’t follow any strict boundaries of genres. That makes me hard to define. I wanna believe that that is the type of music that takes things forward instead of stepping in one place.

Who are your SHEROES?

My manager Krista Schmidt – the most badass, sensitive, and forward thinker I know.

Ms. Lauryn Hill, cause she’s an incredible innovator who opened doors for all of us, and I happen to be listening to her as I write these words.

All mothers. Seriously.

What is next for you in 2024?

I’m gonna keep making some music here, then go to the US for a little bit to promote the album (and open for P!NK) and I’m having a baby top of next year so who the hell knows what’s after that….
