Kenya Roberson Turns Designer Surplus into Global Fashion Mission
What inspired you to launch Elite Garment Distro, and how has your journey evolved since its inception?
My inspiration for founding Elite Garment Distro stemmed from a desire to bridge the gap between luxury brands and global markets, particularly in underprivileged regions. Recognizing the potential to provide designer brands to areas that might otherwise lack access, I envisioned a platform that would redefine the export apparel industry.  Since our inception, we’ve expanded our partnerships with leading brands and retailers in the USA, acquiring a diverse range of inventory, including excess stock, liquidations, and shelf-pulls. This evolution has allowed us to offer elite brands in large quantities at unbeatable prices, benefiting both vendors and purchasers.
How do you blend your fashion sense with the logistics of apparel resale on a global scale?
My background in fashion, including styling and selling for Herve Leger and freelance modeling, provided me with a deep understanding of brand aesthetics and market trends.  Combining this fashion sense with logistics expertise, I ensure that our inventory aligns with current demands while efficiently reaching global markets. Our process involves collaborating directly with top-tier brands to source authentic products and utilizing efficient logistics to distribute them worldwide, ensuring customer satisfaction and repeat business. 
As a female leader in a male-dominated industry, what key challenges have you faced, and how did you overcome them?
Navigating a predominantly male-dominated industry presented challenges, including instances of gender-based disrespect during business dealings. Being one of the few female liquidation business owners nationwide, I faced skepticism and bias.  Overcoming these obstacles required resilience, confidence, and a commitment to excellence. Building a reputation for integrity and delivering consistent results helped establish trust and credibility, allowing me to break through barriers and succeed.
Your company focuses on sustainability by keeping excess inventory out of landfills. Why is this mission important to you?
Sustainability is at the core of Elite Garment Distro’s mission. The fashion industry produces 92 million tons of waste annually, contributing significantly to environmental degradation.  By sourcing remnant inventory from brands and finding ways to distribute it to consumers, we reduce waste and extend the life of these garments. This approach not only provides affordable clothing to communities in need but also prevents millions of garments from ending up in oceans and landfills, making a positive impact on both people and the planet.
How does your intuition play a role in making the right business decisions when buying and selling apparel?
Intuition, honed over years of experience, plays a pivotal role in decision-making. Knowing when to take risks and when to hold back is crucial. This balance, guided by gut feelings and informed by industry knowledge, has been instrumental in navigating the complexities of the fashion resale market and achieving success. 
Can you share a standout moment where your philanthropic efforts had a significant impact on a community?
One of our most impactful initiatives involved donating over 100,000 pieces of clothing and shoes annually to communities in need.  Witnessing the joy and gratitude of recipients reinforced our commitment to giving back and highlighted the profound difference that access to quality apparel can make in people’s lives.
What regions or markets have you found most receptive to the products you export, and why?
We have found significant receptivity in countries such as Mexico, Guatemala, Honduras, Chile, Bolivia, Ghana, Nigeria, and Australia.  These markets have a demand for quality apparel at accessible prices, and our offerings of elite brands in large quantities meet this need effectively.
How do you balance managing a successful business while staying true to your philanthropic goals?
Balancing business success with philanthropic goals involves integrating social responsibility into our core operations. By aligning our business model with sustainable practices and community support, we ensure that growth and giving back go hand in hand. This holistic approach allows us to achieve financial success while making a positive impact on society.
What advice would you give to women aspiring to break into the wholesale or logistics side of the fashion industry?
To women aspiring to enter the wholesale or logistics sectors of fashion, I advise embracing resilience and confidence. Building a strong network, continuously learning, and maintaining integrity are key. It’s essential to trust your intuition, take calculated risks, and remain steadfast in your vision, even in the face of challenges.
