Olivia Perez On Building Her Own Lifestyle Brand

Olivia Perez is an LA girl who’s found her home in NYC, one who believes there’s a delicious surprise around every corner in the city. But sometimes, in a world of GPS and iPhones, it’s difficult to find new places and discover things that you haven’t done before. Friend of a Friend, an online lifestyle publication that places its readers one degree of separation away from the tastemakers and influencers of today, lets Olivia turn her passion for finding new things into a full-time job, where she gets to explore, engage, and challenge the limits of her comfort zone.

Friend of a Friend launched this year! What’s been the biggest learning experience with it so far? What about the biggest successes?

The biggest success and learning experience was definitely our pop-up. It gave us a deeper understanding of our community and helped us to improve on what we’ve built as we move forward. We loved being able to take things offline and into a place that’s authentic and personal to our brand. That’s where we make the most impact—creating a lifestyle that people can connect and relate to. But I learn something new every day…it’s a never-ending sticky note.

What’s some of the best advice you were given when you were just starting out?

Never settle.

What do you think is the biggest misconception about being a “blogger?”

I have to admit, I’ve never thought of myself as a “blogger.” I think technology has blurred the lines so much that the intersection of social media and content creation is complicated to the point that you can’t just be one thing. I went to school for journalism and business, and found a way to connect my passion for discovering the unknown with the innate desire I have to share it with people. I’ve never really put a label on it.

Do you ever leave the house without makeup? Why/why not?

Absolutely! I never work out or get on a flight with makeup on. It’s important to let your skin breathe.

What are some necessary in-flight beauty products?

One Love Organics Skin Savior Waterless Beauty Balm, Naturopathica Lavender Honey Balancing Mist, and SK-II Signs Eye Mask.

You’re going out for dinner and drinks with the girls. What color lipstick are you wearing? Any particular brand?

NARS Bahama or It Cosmetics YLBB Lip Liner in Buff Nude.

It’s festival season, and you’re shopping for bronzer. Which one do you buy?

I love the bareMinerals READY bronzer.

What’s your favorite festival memory?

Anytime I’m with my friends at Coachella and Spicy Pie is involved.

Which Spice Girl do you most identify with?

Definitely Baby Spice.

Where’s the best place to summer vacay?

Capri!
