If You Like Game of Thrones, You Might Like The Lesbian Porn Bree Mills Directs
Bree Mills is a lesbian director who makes girl-on-girl porn for the same kind of people who watch Game of Thrones. So basically, everyone.
“We’ve been called the Marvel Comics of porn,” she said, laughing, during our phone interview, while explaining to me how her films often function similarly to TV episodes, with recurring characters, in-depth plot construction, and strong character development. “Character development, for our fans, has become very important to them,” she said. Newsflash: porn can be interesting, y’all!
Bree founded Girlsway, a network of lesbian porn films, through Gamma productions, after years of working in the marketing sector of Gamma. Everybody knows about porn, but not everybody is aware of the women making efforts to make pornography something accessible, interesting, and relatable to young women.
In honor of Pride month, and sex in general, we interviewed Bree, and even got tips on how you could be the next female porn director, below.
What are you up to, and what are you working on?
So I divide my time between LA and Montreal. I’m moving to LA permanently at the end of the year, but the production company I work for, Gamma, is based in Montreal. I’m down here shooting my next movie, which is my imagining of Little Red Riding Hood. I had the idea of doing a sort-of Tim Burton re-imagining of a fairytale, and this one is great because the whole story is about temptation, and predators, and I thought that’d be great to springboard off of.
So how will you do it?
Basically, what really interests me about the story, is that it’s all about when you disobey your mother and you go off the “path”— it translates so well into coming-of-age stories, and there are all these people that Little Red Riding Hood is in danger of getting tricked by. So I took Little Red, and turned her into this wild child. She’s found by a social worker, and then put into this home that’s a front for a woman using wayward girls and pushing them into sex traffic.
Whoa!
Yeah [laughing]. And she’s pretty trapped within herself, and throughout the course of the film, she meets people who bring her out of her shell, she’s able to escape all this temptation, and ends up saving her family. For me, I always like to take some of these darker and psychological aspects of sex, and really weave them as its own character. People who are watching my content are watching it the way they watch Game of Thrones, you know? And I do a lot of recurring characters, a lot of people popping back up.
Do you watch Game of Thrones?
I do. I tune in and and tune out though.
What inspired you to direct in the first place?
My academic background is in film. I spent most of my twenties watching all the films that I could, so that I could be the know-it-all at dinner parties. But I was the marketing director for Gamma for a while, which is a production company that partners with different industries and runs their websites. I became very interested in consumer behavior. Because sex is one of those subjects that’s just endless, and fascinating, and so when you’re studying that, and catering to it, you glean so much information. I’ve always been a closeted voyeur at heart, and always loved watching what people are doing, and picking up on trends. So at a certain point, Gamma had the idea to start their own network, and I kind of raised my hand, and was like, me! I’ll take this on!
Oh, okay, so you started Girlsway.
Yeah. I’ll tend to refer to myself as the Mother of Dragons when it comes to Girlsway. Another Game of Thrones thing [laughing]. I launched that, and it was sort-of a personal project for me, but now I co-direct, I write, and there’s a great team behind the site now.
Did you know sex rates are declining among millennials?
That’s sad.
Is your audience primarily women?
No, it’s actually men, late twenties and up. 90% of our customer base are men, and the rest are heterosexual and gay women. And couples.
Is your goal to have more women watching, or—
I’ll be honest. The response I always give is that, everyone that wants to watch our content is welcome with open arms. We create stories that we find interesting and erotic, and create this mentality to get someone off, and excited for next week, and so whatever kind of person that is, is welcome. We crowdsource story ideas, so a lot of the stories are literally submitted by members of our site. At a certain point, you run out of stories.
Why do you think there are girls that are watching porn?
Most women who I’ve spoken to, within about five minutes of telling what I do, they’ll admit to enjoying or watching porn. I think a lot of women do watch, but there’s still a stigma in society that says porn is something that bros watch, and that as a female you can’t be empowered, or open about your sexual taste. But when you look at the convergence of what’s happening right now, between mainstream and adult entertainment, people are much more open about their habits. And so hopefully that breaks down some boundaries. The more visibility that we give to responsible adult filmmakers, both female and male that are producing really interesting, really sexy stories, the better. At the end of the day, I want to create the same level of enjoyment of watching anything that you really love. I don’t want to subscribe to typical porn conventions. I want to make interesting stories with interesting characters.
How can people get into your line of work?
Getting into the adult industry behind the camera? Most production that’s shot within the United States is in Los Angeles, and like any entertainment sector, you’re going to get in from the ground up, so there are people who have started in the industry as PAs, and worked their way up to head of production. It’s really like any type of production industry, you need to find your way in, and learn the ropes. There are different entry points that you can make. A lot of writers are needed right now, and there aren’t a lot of women writers. As we see that more people like story-porn, you need people who can write a complete sentence. So that’s a great way to get into the industry as well.
