Bawse Kitty’s Korner: How I Became a Cam Girl

Webcam girl Bawse Kitty is Galore’s newest contributor, bringing you reports on what it’s like to work as a camgirl online. This is her first column.

This morning I woke up to my favorite type of email from the website that hosts my webcam work: “Daily $400 BONUS” was in big bold letters in the subject line.

I love these emails; I swear they bring a genuine wide grin to my face every Monday morning — until I click on the fine print and read the requirements to win this cash. Usually they’re asking for a ton of bullshit (a.k.a. actual work and performance) and things I’m not necessarily eager to do.

I love being a webcam model, I really do. It beats every job I’ve had thus far and trust me, I’ve had plenty. From personal styling at Nordstrom, to working as a receptionist, a pre-K teacher, a stripper, a cashier, and lastly my last vanilla job as a telemarketer. Pretty much everything under the sun, I’ve tried.

But nothing and I mean nothing compared to the possibility of thirst trapping and staying at home to get that check.

I was approached to start camming by this weirdo fan on Tumblr, like three years ago. He came across some sexy viral photos of me and wouldn’t stop messaging me about webcam opportunities. I couldn’t separate webcam from porn. So I was offended. I was still in my parents’ house and there was no way I was going to get caught doing porn. So I ignored him, for months. I regret that because who knows where I could’ve been right now in the cam world? This was in 2012 and its now 2016. *screams out loud* which brings us to our first rule: Always do your research.

Had I done my proper research, I could’ve been in some serious cash right now. I had already accumulated a lusty fan base via social media at that point that would have been willing to pay for my content, and I was just doing it for fun and no money. Don’t be like the old me!

Starting off as a cam girl with absolutely no experience may seem like a daunting and nerve wracking task but it’s simple. The first step is just getting started, when you log in for the first time and begin broadcasting a wave of nervousness will hit your body, if you’re not nervous are you even human? You’ll think tons of people will swarm to your chat room but honestly maybe a couple people will enter in at first, if that. And they may not even stay for long. Don’t be discouraged. You bought your sexy outfit, a new webcam and beat your face for this moment. Don’t give up.

My first day as a cam girl I didn’t know what I wanted to do online. I wasn’t really sure, nor had I planned out a “Show”. My shows now consist of mainly twerk and tease, I treat my personal cam show like an online strip club. What that means is I hardly get naked. I don’t play with toys online,or participate in cum shows. It’s important to kind of let that be clear so you can gain an appropriate audience when you broadcast. It’s always up to you on the type of show you want to deliver. Watch other cam girls before you get online to score tips and ideas on what gets more tokens.

Being a camgirl is fun and exciting but it is still work. Juggling my oh-so supportive boyfriend, family, friends, social life and my own personal sanity is a freaking lot. Add in at least 40 hours of broadcast time to get an actual REAL paycheck and you have a worn out Kitty. But a real #Bawse controls her own money and knows how to balance her 24. You have to be very strict on yourself and actually go to work. Get your money, don’t be lazy and watch Netflix all day on your laptop. Use it as a tool, to get your cash. Log in!! You never know who is lurking on the site and ready to drop some serious cash in your chat that day. The more time you spend online, the more chances you’ll have to gain new followers and fans.

I’ve never been worried about my family finding out about my life as a cam girl. I’ve had to show them photo shoots of mine, and although they disapprove most sites allow you the option to block states and countries from your profile. I know it works because so many people from my hometown complain about seeing error messages when they click the “link in my bio.” Nosy ass people from your city just want to talk bad about you. It’s very rare that they are GENUINELY supportive, especially with sex work. Its taboo. Get used to it. Protect yourself.

I would have to say the most draining part of being a cam girl is men treating you like an escort. It’s so ugly and do not hesitate to BLOCK anyone who makes you feel  uncomfortable. Speaking of uncomfortable, you can do whatever you want on cam. Don’t feel intimidated by other models that are squirting in a handstand. Do what makes you feel comfortable; create your own audience based off what you have to offer. Don’t sell yourself short, and flash a tit because you think you’ll make a couple “tokens.” Remember what it is that you’re doing. This is your body and you make the rules. PERIOD.

It’s still a competitive and soon to be saturated business, so that’s all the love I have to give for now. (I’m not rich yet, I have to make my coins too.) Remember camming isn’t for everyone. It’s okay to take another route. It’s okay to be a good girl. It’s okay to be a doctor and spend your late nights cramming for exams. Will the female body soon be so easily accessed that we become desensitized to it? Have you even considered why you want to cam, or are you following a trend? You don’t need to feel pressured to be sexy if that’s not your forte. Work with what’s best for you there are many other ways to make money and you will gain YOUR best results.

Xoxo,

Kitty.
