It is the wellspring of rage and fear, but also of ambition and creativity. Jung reminds us that to be whole we must integrate this hidden twin with the curated self we offer to the spotlight. We must befriend our shadow. Bedazzle it, even.

This is not to say that the darkness we face—mass starvation, forced migration, assaults on trans, queer, and women’s rights, climate collapse, rampant inequality—can be solved through personal self-reflection. These crises call for solidarity: a commitment not only to our own shadows but to the shadows of others. Facing the darkness means seeing it clearly, even acknowledging that, sometimes, it can be chic. To inhabit the light, we must know the shape of the shadow it casts.
