6 Step-By-Step Tips On How To Apply Matte Lipstick

Much like Kylie Jenner and Rihanna, matte lipstick isn’t going anywhere.

If you’re looking to get this season’s biggest lip trend just right, use our step-by-step guide to the perfect matte lipstick application. Once you go matte, you never go back!

STEP 1: Exfoliate Your Lips

The texture of matte lipstick tends to emphasize the flaws of your lips, which is why it’s extremely important to prepare your lips by making them smooth and soft. Exfoliate your lips to get rid of any excess or peeling skin — this will help your makeup glide on easily. There’s plenty of lip scrubs available for purchase (our favs include Fresh Sugar Lip Polish, The Lip Scrub by Sara Happ, and Tarte Maracuja Lip Exfoliant), but you can also prepare a lip scrub at home! Mix some sugar with olive oil and honey, gently massage your lips with it, then rinse!

STEP 2: Hydrate Your Lips

Since you don’t want your matte look to turn into something glossy, it’s important that you do use a non-greasy lip balm before application. Carry it with you throughout the day to keep your lips from looking dry (we love this one from Soap and Glory).

STEP 3: Prime Around Your Lips

Matte formulas won’t bleed or run… that much, but to ensure your lipstick stays in place all day, try a lip primer! Bite Beauty Line & Define Lip Primer is a fav amongst our Galore beauty editors — it’s sure to keep your pout in check.

STEP 4: Opt For A Lighter Shade

When you’re at the beauty counter, consider which lipstick colors will work best with your skin tone, but also remember that a darker matte lip will exaggerate any flaws, especially dry lips! Candy K by Kylie Cosmetics is our fav matte nude on the market.

STEP 5: Use A Brush

Fill your lips in using a lip brush to fill in the edges and add definition. Pro tip: Add a double coat if you want your lip color to last even longer.

STEP 6: Blot Your Lips

Blot your lipstick by pressing your lips between a tissue or with paper. Blotting will help you avoid cakey and over-dry looking lips.
