2017 was the year of the celeb face mask selfie

We all like to complain about how fake and curated everyone is on Instagram, especially when it comes to influencers and celebrities. But a new trend emerged this year that made celebs seem relatable for a hot second: the face mask selfie.

People use face masks to solve problems with their skin. So for a celebrity to post a selfie in a face mask, it’s basically an admission that they aren’t actually perfect. #relatable.

But on the flipside, it’s not like a face mask selfie is a no-makeup selfie. Face masks cover up your blemishes and undereye bags even better than makeup does. In a face mask, you can still look flawless, just in a different way. So celebs pounced on this trend as a way to earn no-makeup street cred, while still camouflaging their zits.

It’s a win-win, really.

So it’s no surprise that this trend popped up on the IG accounts of both celebs and normals this year. It’s low-maintenance but also super flattering, because weirdly enough, the only thing that makes your eyes pop more than a full smokey eye is a full charcoal mask.

Here are a few types of face mask selfies that just wouldn’t quit this year.
