Earlier on in the year we premiered Zolita’s video “Teen Dream”, which was a 90s inspired, fun venture. What’s the inspiration for this video?
This video was originally a self-portrait project for one of my film classes. I wanted to record a powerful statement rap and then visually create a video that drew inspiration from the internet aesthetic and pop culture.

What message are you trying to get across with this video?
It’s a personal statement and I’m very much about women’s independence and liberation. I guess the message I wanted to get across is the power of female sexuality when used in the way the woman wants.

Do you think more video/songs by women are reasserting womens independence and broadening women’s sexuality?
Definitely! It’s amazing. Beyonce obviously, and so many of Rihanna’s songs! Young impressionable girls are constantly listening to sexist lyrics they’re fed on the radio so It’s especially incredible when top 40 hits push the women’s independence/sexuality message instead. It’s helping women change the imaginary rules and boundaries they have in their heads.

Who are your favorite female artists?
Stevie Nicks and Joni Mitchell are my all time favorite but I obviously love Beyonce, Britney, and Miley.

What did you think of J-Lo’s new video that intended to reversed the gender roles?
I thought it was a smart video. JLO is bringing the concept of reversed gender roles into popular culture which is very cool.

What’s your next project?
I recorded a pop song called “Valley Gurl” inspired by the people I grew up with in Calabasas so I’ll go home to film a video for that soon. Here in NYC I’m currently shooting a documentary about the return of “club kids” which is a project I’m super stoked on!
