Zayn Malik Just Released a New Single and It’s a Little Confusing
Last night Zayn Malik stopped by The Tonight Show to make his debut television performance as a solo artist.
Obviously this was a big moment for Gigi Hadid’s trophy boyfriend, and Zayn decided that the best way to capitalize on the exposure would be to also premiere his new single, “It’s You.”
While the song provided ample opportunity for the sad angel boy to make puppy dog eyes and hit high notes, we couldn’t help but be distracted by one thing: we had no idea WTF was going on with the lyrics — like, at all.
According to an interview Zayn did, “It’s You” is about his breakup from his long-term girlfriend/fiancée Perrie Edwards. Clearly this should help the song make more sense, right? WRONG.
In an attempt to figure out what’s going on, let’s take a look at the first two verses of the song, okay?
“She got, she got, she got / her own reason / for talking to me
She don’t, she don’t, she don’t / give a f*ck / about what I need
And I can’t tell you why / because my brain can’t equate it
Tell me your lies / because I just can’t face it.
I won’t, I won’t, I won’t / cover the scar / I’ll let it be
So my silence / so my silence won’t / be mistaken for believing
Am I wrong for wanting us to make it?”
Those are a lot of words that say basically nothing, so obviously, we have some questions.
For one, who is she? Is she Perrie or is Zayn alluding to somebody else, like that fan he was caught with his arm around that one time?
And is “I won’t cover the scar” Zayn’s way of confirming that he’s not getting rid of his Perrie Edwards tattoo? Because that’s just a mistake.
Watch Zayn perform the song and see if you can’t suss out what he’s talking about any better than we could. Good luck. Take two Aspirin and call us in the morning.
