Teens Are More Likely To Want a “Traditional Family” Than Old People

Women still have a long way to go in the workplace, and a fair wage would be a good place to start. But for the most part, it seems like more and more women are shunning traditional gender roles and being bosses instead of shrinking away to play housewife and letting their boo bring home the bacon.

But apparently, this trend might not be as widespread as it seems. Young people might actually be more into traditional gender roles than old people, according to a new study of high school seniors.

This isn’t totally shocking, considering high schoolers aren’t necessarily woke yet, but do you know what is (maybe) shocking? That the percentage of teens who favor a “traditional family structure” has actually increased in recent years.

According to a report done by the Council on Contemporary Families in 2014, 58 percent of high school seniors think that the best family is one where daddy pays the bills and mom pops out babies.

In 1994, the report found that 42 percent of high school seniors felt this way.

Even more infuriating, almost 40 percent of the high school seniors in 2014 think “the husband should make all the important decisions in the family,” while this number was below 30 percent in 1994.

It’s possible that high schoolers simply support what they know (or see on TV), or that they haven’t really given much thought to their careers at this point in their lives, but Vogue hypothesized it may be due to the lack of support the US gives to dual-income families. After all, US couples with children are the unhappiest in the world.

Think about it, if you grew up with two working parents and were constantly eating Hot Pockets for dinner and being driven to soccer practice by an evil carpool mom, you would probably support traditional family structures too.

I don’t want to say that the solution is to just not have kids…but I mean, that’s not a bad idea.

In the mean time, make sure all the young peeps in your life know what a “traditional” family isn’t the only way to achieve a happy and healthy family. After all, dudes are just as capable as staying home with the children as women are.
