Why Athleisure and Bodycon Are Never Going Away

The word “trend” always makes me think of the wise words of our former cover girl Heidi Klum. One minute you’re in, and the next minute you’re out.

Or at least that’s the way fashion trends worked when I was growing up in the 2000s.

One summer boho everything was in and the next summer everybody was wearing popped polos and micro mini jean skirts.

But these days, some trends seem like they’re season-proof. Like athleisure, which has been around forever and shows no signs of being dunzo any time soon.

And it turns out, there’s a reason behind why some trends stick around forever while others don’t – it all depends on how much the trend is targeted towards how people live their lives.

“Everyone keeps wondering when this athleisure trend is going to go away,” Roopal Patel, the fashion director at Saks Fifth Avenue told W Magazine. But these days “designers are looking at how people are living their day-to-day lives.”

And what do people want on a day-to-day basis?

They want to be comfortable while still looking cute, basic, cool, or whatever their personal brand is.

They want to wear sneakers to work. They want to wear leggings while they’re running errands so they don’t have to change before they work out. They want to wear a sports bra because their abs are fly and the world needs to know.

And if that’s what people want, why shouldn’t designers invest more resources into making those types of clothes?

It’s easy to talk yourself out of buying a fancy dress because where are you ever going to wear it, but it’s much harder to resist the allure of something you could feasibly wear most days of the week, no matter what you end up doing.

And this trend isn’t remotely new – it’s been going on for years.

Leggings as pants first emerged as a major trend in 2010 and by 2011 it had become such a thing that the New York frickin Times was weighing in on whether or not it was acceptable to wear yoga pants to work. Can you even imagine such an innocent time?

Since then, athletic wear has only increased its stranglehold on fashion, and it’ll probably never stop because when are women ever going to stop being busy or stop wanting to be comfortable?

Probably never.

And athleisure isn’t the only old trend that’s never going out of style.

No matter how many oversized t-shirts women wear, they’ll never give up on their skinny jeans and bodycon everything, because it fulfills their day-to-day need of looking hot.

Fashion trends may come and go but looking hot and feeling comfortable are forever.

Which is good news if you’re into these trends, but bad news if you want to make room for something completely new.

It could happen, but I wouldn’t bet all my money on it.
