We Talk 90s Heartthrobs, Pin Collabs And Everything Pop Culture With Laser Kitten

Laser Kitten is a high quality clothing and accessories brand that is heavily inspired by art, pop culture, and growing up in the 80s and 90s. Founder and Creative Director, Marisa Ravel, works with artists from all over the world to bring you exclusive collaborations—namely on pins. With a full clothing line expected to drop early 2016, Marissa took time out of her busy schedule to talk 90s heartthrobs, Saved by the Bell, and what we can expect from Laser Kitten’s online shop in the near future!

Where did your love for all things 90s come from?

The 90’s made a HUGE impact on me. In high school (1998) I worked at a buy/sell/trade vintage clothing store, so my love of fashion and vintage clothing started young. I dressed like a mix between Baby Spice and Britney Spears. I wore shimmery white eye shadow with glitter gel on top and frosty pink lipstick every single day. I religiously watched Saved by the Bell, 90210, Melrose Place, MTV (when they had music videos), Beavis and Butthead and My So Called Life. I was obsessed with all kinds music throughout the 90s, Weezer, Beastie Boys, Radiohead,  2Pac, Nirvana, Mazzy Star, Hole, Portishead, The Eels, Deftones, Wu Tang, Sublime, NOFX, No Doubt, 311, Blink 182, and so many more. In the 90’s I experienced a lot of firsts, first kiss, new high schools in different cities, first car, first internet chat room, first time living on my own, moving to San Francisco for Art College. Those memories still inspire me daily.

If you could have a threesome with a few 90s heartthrobs who would they be and why?

I don’t think my boyfriend will like this question!

Ultimate throwback track?

Popular by Nada Surf or Cryin’ by Aerosmith, it’s a tie.

90210 or Saved by the Bell? Who’s the coolest?

90210 is the coolest for sure. They had real life issues like drugs, cancer, abortion, suicide, cheating, crazy parents, AND amazing outfits. Saved by the Bell had some amazing outfits but was too sugar coated to be considered “cool” except for the diet pills episode. Just my opinion.

What item from Laser Kitten is your best seller?

The Lost Boys Pins sold out really fast. Now our best seller is the Edward/Kim pin. I did those both in collaboration with Sara M. Lyons.

Where did you grow up?

I’m a California girl. I was born in Sacramento, CA and grew up in a suburb called Carmichael. I also spent a lot of time as a child and teen in a little beach town called Carmel, where my family has a vacation home. I really grew up in both places. Immediately after high school, I moved to San Francisco and lived there from 1998-2015, so I truly consider that home, and where I really “grew up”.

Do you like lasers and kittens? Where did the name come from?

I do love kittens and lasers but sadly, I’m allergic to cats in real life. I came up with the name in 2007 for my custom laser cut jewelry line that I had from 2007-2013. The name was inspired by internet pop culture at the time, lol cats, keyboard cats, laser cats, ninja cats, anything with stupid cats was going viral for the first time. I thought the name was relevant, cute and sexy. I decided to bring it back to life and use the name again for my new venture in clothing and accessories.

Who are your idols?

Betsey Johnson, Lisa Frank, Iris Apfel, Sophia Amoruso, Coco Chanel, and anyone else who dares to follow their dreams, as crazy as they may be.

Last item you purchased?

Vintage Chanel paintings from Paris at the Melrose Flea Market/Trading Post.

What is next for Laser Kitten?

I just did a super cute collab with @iscreamcolour. I should have pins made with the art from that series in the next month or so.  In early 2016, the focus will be more on clothing. Laser Kitten will have 3 super-soft vintage inspired t-shirts, crop tops and off shoulder sweatshirts, based off of my personal favorite styles. The graphics on the clothing will range in my own illustrations, collaborations I do with artists, and patches/sequin appliqués. Everything is being manufactured in San Francisco right now. I just picked fabrics, so excited.

What celeb would you want to dress?

It’s always been my dream to dress pop/rock stars. Currently, the vintage clothing I embellish is bedazzled in a variety of unique sequin appliqués so it works well under stage lights. I would love to create custom jackets for Lana Del Rey, Melanie Martinez, Charlie XCX, Tove Lo, Miley Cyrus, Katy Perry, Madonna, Christina Aguilera, Marina Diamandis, Gwen Stefani, Lady Gaga, Rhianna and many more badass babes. Hit me up ladies!
