#TallGirlProblems Resolved With TTYA
Designer and former fashion stylist Irene Agbontaen turned a problem into a business by creating the brand Taller Than Your Average. Fed up with sleeves and pant legs being too short for her figure, she dedicated TTYA to ending the frustration of tall women around the world! We chatted with the fierce babe about the epic limited edition t-shirt series, how to rock leggings, and working with Ted Pearce.
What does #IWasBornMe mean?
#IWASBORNME is inspired by identity. After recently turning 30, I wanted to celebrate the journey of understanding how to love and celebrate ones self.
How does Naomi Campbell embody that slogan? Which other strong females are a good example of #IWasBornMe?
Edition 1 was inspired by Naomi Campbell. She has always been herself and never apologetic for it. She’s a business mogul and also a fellow South London girl. She has always been an inspiration for me, so I couldn’t think of anyone better for the launch tee.
What’s a #tallgirlproblem that all the tall chicas can relate to?
Wrist and ankle swingers!!! I never had a long sleeve top that ACTUALLY fit the length of my arms before I made my own with TTYA. Last year I launched on ASOS.com as one of the first brands to offer clothes for tall girls – my collection sold out in a week! TTYA is all about empowering women to feel style-conscience not self-conscience. Having wardrobe essentials that fit makes you look and feel great!
What do you do when your high heels make you taller than your BF?
I’ve only dated boys who are taller than me…hahaha.
How can girls rock leggings for a daytime look without looking sloppy?
Leggings are an amazing staple and a foundation to any women’s wardrobe. I love leggings as they are comfortable, wearable and light! For a causal look I usually pair mine with a staple white tee, sneakers and a blazer for a smart casual look. The sneakers and staple tee can be replaced with an open-toe heeled sandal and cami for a comfortable evening look.
How did working with Ted Pearce come about? How do the two of you play off each other’s strengths?
Myself and Ted share a work space, and I am a massive fan of his work. Our studio is basically one big massive set with the most amazing artwork and sculptures, including a life-size cutout of Grace Jones! We bounce off each others energy and share similar work ethics, so it was a no brainer for us to work together.
