Vanessa Hudgens Just Slayed an Anti-Slut-Shaming Anthem on ‘Grease Live’
When you think about musical theatre, a perfect blonde ingénue with a chirpy singing voice whistling while she works might be the first thing that comes to mind.
But as Vanessa Hudgens showed last night on Fox’s “Grease Live,” there’s one musical bad girl who not only does whatever tf she wants, but doesn’t have time for your shaming afterwards.
In case you’ve been living under a rock since “Grease” became a thing, first several decades ago and more recently last night on Fox, it’s not your typical high school musical. Vanessa plays Rizzo, the head of a girl gang called the Pink Ladies. Rizzo fears she might be pregnant and tells the possible baby daddy — and that’s when rumors start flying.
So Rizzo sings the anti-slut-shaming anthem, “There Are Worse Things I Could Do,” with sample lines including:
There are worse things I could do
Than go with a boy or two
Even though the neighborhood thinks I’m trashy and no good
I suppose it could be true
But there are worse things I could do
And it’s true — too often, women are judged or shamed for behavior that isn’t actually hurting anyone, just because other people can’t handle it. It’s a burden we have to bear that men constantly escape. Rizzo’s boyfriend totally escapes the judgmental eye of Rydell High during the pregnancy scare, but Rizzo’s not so lucky.
As anyone who’s been through this can attest, it can lead you to develop an impenetrably thick skin. Instead of fighting back at your harassers or trying to prove the rumors wrong, you tend to go about your business as if nothing bad’s happening. Or as Rizzo sings in the end of the song, you start to feel like this: “To cry in front of you is the worst thing I could do.”
Slightly unrelated but adding to the emotional scene: Vanessa’s dad died earlier yesterday before she performed, and she decided to go on with the show.
Watch the video below and don’t let the haters stop you from carrying on with innocuous bad girl behavior.
