Too Bad Rue Died In The Hunger Games Because IRL She’s A Genius


16-year old Amandla Stenberg, best known for her role as Rue in the Hunger Games made this video for a high school history project. But its message about the history of Black culture, and the effects of cultural appropriation is now blowing up on the internet. In the video, Amandla gives us an impressive run down on the ways in which pop stars cherry pick aspects of Blackness, in order to look “edgy,” or “cool,” and how this behavior in turn erases and trivializes the lives and realities of the actual Black people. At the end of the video, Amandla asks the question, “What would America be like if we loved Black people as much as we love Black culture?” Watch the video entitled “Don’t Cash Crop On My Cornrows” below.
