This Weekend: 5 Essential Northside Festival Shows
Northside Festival, easily the SXSW of Brooklyn, starts this week! Over 350 bands play venues throughout Brooklyn- relying less on the spectacle of traditional festivals and more on the music…at least we would like to think so. Here are the five shows you absolutely cannot miss.

The UK melodic post-punk band have made garnered critical acclaim with their self-entitled debut album. Their live shows are always detached and brooding in the best way possible. Catch them Thursday at the Scenic showcase with Titus Andronicus or Saturday at Urban Outfitters’ Space Ninety 8.
The sisters from TEEN have a way with soulful harmonies and interesting rhythmic exploration. Their second album The Way and Color finally gave them some much deserved attention. Check them out at the Terrorbird Media Showcase this Thursday.
3. Beach Fossils
Scratch that. How about everyone at the Captured Tracks Showcase? Craft Spells, Beach Fossils, Juan Wauters, Axxa/Abraxas, and Donavan Blanc play for Brooklyn’s favorite record label. The showcase is this Friday at Warsaw. Count me in.
2. Thee Oh Sees
Thank god Thee Oh Sees hiatus was short-lived. After playing with Coachwhips, John Dwyer is back to melt faces at McCarren Park this Saturday with Thee Oh Sees. Did I mention the show is free?
1. Mac DeMarco
Macky’s back in Brooklyn! After extensive touring for Salad Days, Mac returns to his US home to play House of Vans with the legendary Charles Bradley. Hopefully you scored an RSVP because this show is going to be WILD.
