There’s a 96% Chance The VMA For Song Of The Summer Is Going To The Wrong Song
MTV lost its cred a long time ago, but you’d still assume that they could do something simple like accurately proclaim the Song Of The Summer, but you would be wrong.
Starting off on a positive note, first we have a couple of solid summer jams that MTV deigned to nominate:
Jack U ft. Justin Bieber – “Where Are U Now”
Major Lazer – “Lean On”
The Weeknd – “Can’t Feel My Face”
Selena Gomez ft. A$AP Rocky – “Good For You”
Taylor Swift – “Bad Blood”
Next, we have a bunch of popular songs that are pretty annoying, but whatever:
OMI – “Cheerleader”
Fetty Wap – “My Way”
Demi Lovato – “Cool For the Summer”
Silento – “Watch Me”
And then we have three songs that you’ve probably only listened to once:
Fifth Harmony – “Worth It”
David Guetta ft. Nicki Minaj – “Hey Mama”
5 Seconds of Summer – “She’s Kinda Hot”
Where’s “Trap Queen”? Where’s Drake? Where’s “Bitch Better Have My Money”? Come on, MTV: focus.
Technically MTV says this is a “new” category, but that’s not entirely true. It briefly existed in 2013, when One Direction (whom I’d never heard of until that evening) beat out “We Can’t Stop”, “Blurred Lines”, “Get Lucky”, “Come And Get It” and “I Need Your Love” because let’s face it “Best Song Ever” was, well the best song ever.
Sigh. Those were the days.
Anyway, despite a few obvious omissions, what’s by far the most questionable thing about the category is the fact that without a doubt the VMA for Song of The Summer is either going to go to 5 Seconds of Summer or 5th Harmony, who are currently just about tied with over 8 million votes.
The closest contender to them is “Where Are U Now” with just over 3 million. “Good For You” lags behind at 1,242, “Bad Blood” isn’t even close and don’t get me started on where “Can’t Feel My Face” stands.
How can this be, you might ask? How are two songs that you never jam out to going to walk away with the title? Because MTV is leaving the matter entirely up to its fans. And by fans, you know what they really mean is teens.
While it’s pointless to try and skew the results from a slew of kids with literally nothing to do before school starts, the only thing left to do is familiarize yourself with the potential candidates for Song of The Summer 2015.
Happy watching. If you have any liquor nearby, now would be a good time to pour yourself a glass.
