Straight Outta Compton, On To The Big Screen
As a newcomer to the film industry, Marlon Yates is off to a great start—he’s acting in this summer’s highly-anticipated Straight Outta Compton. Alongside O’Shea Jackson Jr. (Ice Cube’s son), Corey Hawkins, and Paul Giametti he’ll star as the D.O.C in the biopic that tells the story of hip-hop’s legendary pioneers, N.W.A. I can’t wait for this to come out; the trailer had me literally on the edge of my seat. However, it’s a long while until August 14th—the film release date—so it was very necessary for us to speak to Marlon about filming the flick, his bad habits, and of course, his favorite Notorious B.I.G. song.
How did you get into character to play D.O.C? What were you most excited for?
I got into character for the role of the D.O.C by listening to his music, and listening to NWA’s music. I think what got me excited the most about playing this role was being on set and being around legends such as Paul Giamatti, Dr. Dre, Ice Cube—all of the guys.
Are you from the East or West Coast? Have you always been a fan of N.W.A?
I’m from Los Angeles, but wasn’t actually an N.W.A fan growing up. I was familiar with them, but I couldn’t have rapped a song for you. I didn’t listen to them growing up, but I’m a fan now. They’re definitely on my iTunes playlist.
If you’re at the club, which guy are you; the one getting too drunk, the one talking to lots of girls, or the guy sitting in the corner texting?
When I’m in the club, I am definitely the guy to get intoxicated and…chat a little bit.
What’s your worst habit?
My worst habit is biting my nails like a mad man.
Is there something that you’ve dreamed of doing for a long time? Why haven’t you done it?
Something I have always dreamt of is being in a movie, and I am currently living out my dream. Hopefully I’ll be featured in many more films after this one.
Before making a telephone call, do you ever rehearse what you are going to say? Why?
I definitely go over what I’m about to say before I make a phone call, because I want to make sure that I get everything I need to say out, in the correct way.
What was the hardest day of shooting Straight Outta Compton? What was the best part?
The hardest day shooting Straight Outta Compton was the last day because I really didn’t want it to end. Everyone on set ended up becoming my family and it’s very hard to say goodbye when you see these people every day. We built a close bond.
What’s your favorite Biggie Smalls song?
My favorite Biggie Smalls song is “Juicy”.
What question do you hate to answer?
The question I hate the most is, “Hey dude, what do you do?”
