Solange’s speech shows why we still need BET to exist
Solange Knowles won BET’s Centric Award last night, and her speech showed why BET is so important not only to people of color, but also culture at large.
This was Solange’s first BET Award and she specifically thanked the network for showing her what successful women of color in entertainment look like when she was growing up.
Here’s what she said:
“I just wanna thank BET for my teenage years, giving me images of queens like Missy Elliot and Lil’ Kim and Aaliyah and Erykah Badu and Lauryn Hill and Kelis and Reese, and the list goes on, and showing me those images and letting me know the sky’s the limit. This is for everyone in the category. I love Syd and Kehlani and SZA and Kelela and all the new school girls who are out here killing it. Thank you so much, this is such an honor, I’m so humbled.”
When you have someone like Stacey Dash saying it’s time to end BET, it’s rad to hear Solange pointing out just how important it is to have a media outlet that celebrates and represents Black women and the work they create.
Solange also kept it super real, saying, “My arm pits are sweating so much right now.” Which, same girl, it’s been hot af outside.
Also worth noting: it was Solange’s 31st birthday on Saturday. Best birthday ever, right?!
