Selena Gomez’s Stylist On How To Give Your Personal Style A Revival

Within the past year, Selena Gomez has made a lot of changes in her life. She’s no longer the good girl who sang bubblegum pop songs and stared in Disney Channel series, nor is she romantically entangled with the former love of her life, Justin Bieber. In short, she’s not a little girl anymore.

Last week the 23-year-old pop star released her new album Revival, which signified the official beginning of a new era in Selena Gomez’s life. The album marked her emergence as a woman who’s taking control over her sound, her personal life, and most importantly, her style.

Enter: stylist Kate Young, whose list of clients range include the always well-dressed Hollywood beauties Natalie Portman, Michelle Williams, Dakota Johnson and Sienna Miller. In 2014, Young and Gomez worked together for the first time, agreeing that a tailored and monochromatic Saint Laurent jumpsuit was the best look for the young star to wear to the 2014 Teen Choice Awards.

What Gomez needed was somebody to help push her style in a grown-up, and distinctly feminine direction, and Young was more than happy to oblige.

“We’ve had a clear vision of what we wanted to do together from the beginning,” explains Young in an interview with Vogue. “There’s an overall mood that we’re going for which is young, modern, clean, and sexy without ever being fussy.”

So what exactly does that mean, style-wise? It means investing in some grown-woman shit, like monochromatic separates:

Ribbed knit dresses:

Sleek and sexy slip dresses:

A going out dress that’s acceptable enough to wear during daylight hours:

Coats that are meant to be draped over the shoulders rather than actually worn:

And, last but not least, outfits that show enough skin to be sexy, but conceal enough to still be classy:

And obviously, you should probably make sure at least 90% of your clothes are black.
